Manchester Met Metropolitan, is is really bad as everyone says it is?

I know people say the reputation of a uni doesn't matter as long as it has a good course and a degree is a degree, but I cant help but want to go a university that doesn't have such a big stigma (or it feels like that anyway) attached to it.

I'm doing a social work undergraduate degree and I'm alternating between whether to put The University of Portsmouth or The Manchester Met Metropolitan University as one of my 3rd options but I'm swaying more to the side of Portsmouth based on the stigma of MMU as it being the University of Manchester's worst counterpart, people go there to party and when the work comes they drop out, just not being taken seriously. But MMU is good for my course but its not my TOP option anyway so idk

I don't know much about social work degrees

But I would base your choice on accreditation (if applicable)/ the scope and modules offered for your course specifically as opposed to the "reputation " of the university as a whole. All unis will have some courses which are better than others in terms of resources and research etc

Is MMU somewhere you can see yourself doing well?

Hi @UniSearcher101

You can find some useful stats about our BA (Hons) Social Work course here - 100% of 3rd year students on the course feel that teaching staff have supported their learning well and 98% of students feel that the course has developed the knowledge and skills they think they'll need for the future.

On the whole, our Social Work course has a really good reputation so I would try to ignore the perception of Man Met student's being 'worse' than others🙂 Choosing a uni is a big decision, so I advise choosing based on the way the course makes you feel (course content, support, etc.) and how you would fit into student life rather than how you think others perceive each university.

I hope this helps!🙂

Do the universities tell you how many students get jobs after the course and what sort of job?

Hi @Flamingo10

You'll be able to discuss this with the academics once enrolled on the course. If you'd like an idea of this before accepting an offer or submitting an application, you can contact our Course Enquiries team who may be able to advise: 0161 247 6969 or [email protected].

Hope this helps,
Mel 🙂

Hi, I actually did my Sociology degree at MMU, and it must be said their student services were excellent - so helpful on the occasions I needed their help.

For any provider, check out their quality report from the Office for Students and attended on site and virtual open days
