did anyone else find the critical thinking terrible?

I’ve spoken to lots this morning who all agree the 3 assessments were very difficult! I think we’re all in the same boat which is reassuring!

Yep, I found them all brutal. I really thought the Management Decisions test was probably the worst. It’s really very subjective at the best of times, but this one (with grammar and spelling errors in two questions that I spotted) was particularly devious. From memory, you have to obtain a minimum pass in all three tests, so there will be some good people who don’t get through based on this test. It’s a nonsense. At least with the other tests, as hard as they were (nasty), there is a right and wrong answer.

Absolutely awful. Written passages that no decent civil servant would ever write designed to completely confuse and misdirect. I'm sure that my face was a horror show

Can I take notes during the test? I've read over the text on the website but cant see anything forbidding it but I still imagine it wont be allowed. It would be handy to do when working out figures.

This is what I thought, there is no way reports or passages would ever be written this way within NICS. They were totally nonsensical

Many ppl I know have used pen and paper doing online tests for previous schemes and it was not a problem so they are doing so again with these tests. Many ppl also reporting that they have found these tests particularly difficult, awkward and time consuming. Ppl are especially concerned about the Management Decisions test as they have no idea whether they will pass that one.

Glad I'm not the only one. I must have changed some answers 3 or 4 times on the CT

I just completed the critical thinking one there now. Good grief. I went back and changed some of my answers, and am now regretting it 😬🙈 that was actually much tougher than I anticipated, and it was supposed to be my easy one.

Was in the top 1% analysing information in DP so considered it a strength and thought would find it the easier one to start with. Found it incredibly difficult and struggled

Surely they can't be that much harder than the DP tests?

I don’t want to do anything to put you off, in case you haven’t started them yet, and everyone is different of course. I found them very difficult and time consuming. I don’t think there is much comparison between these and the SO/DP tests. Maybe because those were timed (the 2019 batch were anyway), they’ve taken a different approach. The familiarisation questions are absolutely nothing like the actual questions. It puts me off applying for the G6 competition to be frank.

Apparently the G6 competition that issued today with eligibility criteria restricting applications to those with 2 years experience at G7 (or equivalent) - was restricted in this way after it became apparent that all grades had applied for the G7 competition as the criteria for G7 was left too wide open. 🤔

i don't think it's fair to imply you have to have 2 years in the G7 grade before you can apply. The competences for G7 and G6 are the same so it's quite unfair. In addition it's going to cause ructions as everyone who is unhappy about long term TPs to G7 will feel even more aggrevied!

They should be it's a substantial step up with a lot more responsibility!

You will definitely need to take notes

That was my experience, others may found it differently

if the text for the narrative and the questions were better written it would be more natural. They are all worded in such a complex manner it was extremely frustrating and challenging no matter which one!.🤦🏻

I agree that this is unfair in the current circumstances due to the unprecedented number of long-term TPs to G7. Many who have been TP'd for less than 24 months (at the closing date for submitting applications in Feb 2025) will embellish their application and hope they won't be sifted out (but if the sift is done properly they should be sifted out) and those TP'd for 24 months plus are eligible to apply even though they are, in most cases, substantive DPs. Meanwhile, as things stand, the majority of other substantive DPs are ineligible. If things were normal across the NICS and there were not hundreds of long-term TPs to G7 I wouldn't see an issue with the eligibility criteria but I think there is an issue with this scheme due to current rate of long-term TPs to G7 and NIPSA should be onto this right away.

Holy smokes only 2 thirds of the way through. Thought I would have been finished by now. Just finished Management Decisions and Analysing Information. Need a wee break before attempting to tackle Critical Thinking. Feel like having a nap in a dark room. That was deffo tougher than the ones I've attempted previously so far. My poor brain hasn't been booted up like that in a long time. Just aswell they were not timed also as MD took me 50mins + and AI a good 1 hour 20mins maybe even 1 hour 30mins. Nothing else for it but a wee cuppa tea and tackle this last one, wish me luck.

Finished thank goodness. I must say some of the wording in those paragraphs in Critical Thinking are ambiguous to say the least. Either it's purposely done like that or some of it just was not worded great, I don't know. Anyway hopefully done enough to pass and then no doubt get sifted out 😀. Certainly not as confident as I normally am coming out of these things. Very best of luck to you all folks. Hopefully a few in this forum make it all the way. Keep us posted.
