The Student Room Group

I(20f) asked a guy from college on a date but just found out he’s 31!?

What do I do? We talked the whole week after I asked for his number on Monday thinking he was 24/25. (I go to college and I’m resitting my a levels so everyone around me is quite young so when I saw him and thought he was cute I just went over) he just mentioned it yesterday and I felt so rude if I said sorry but you’re too old so kept talking to him and now he said he will meet me next week but also on Friday at college during lunch. Idk what to sayyy all his friends saw me go over and now I’ll just have made it awkward for the next six months of college. I told him I was 20 as soon as we talked but stupidly forgot to ask him. We’ve talked so much since yesterday too idk what to do but I can’t be with a 31 year old that’s just too old. He said he lives with his parents and asked me to pick him up in my car for our date too and it’s just like I don’t want that.

How do I let him down in a nice way without making it awkward for the next 6 months that I have to see him at college before my exams 😭

"I'm sorry I was looking for something long term, and you might not have that long left"

🤣I would LOVE to say that honestly

Well at least he didn’t deceive about his age, unless he’s actually 35. I suggest being honest that the age gap is more than you thought and you just want to be friends. It’s not as hurtful a rejection as you still fancied him. You don’t need to mention that he needs to move out of his parents house and get a car

Tell him that you're failing your classes (doesn't have to be true lol) and that you're going to focus extra hard on studying etc and just very very very very verrryyy slowly start talking to him less and less. Obviously, still be friendly, but just veeeerrrrryyyyyyyyyy slowly talk to him less

Hahahhaa that actually it’s not a bad idea!

However I’ve already messaged him what the message above suggested and he took it really well and said I don’t need to be sorry and see me around ☺️
