Possibility of a clash with oxford interview

Hello, I have recently come into a potential conflict with interviews. Essentially, where I am, it is incredibly difficult to get a driving test locally and they are very few and far between. I have been able to get a driving test, however it is on the first day that my course at Oxford interview.

I'd like to plainly say that I haven't received an invitation to interview yet, and there is a very real possibility I won't (I'd like to think positively though!) so this could be a non issue, but I reckon it would be helpful for people in similar situations and I can't find any guidance on the web.

If and when I get an invitation to interview, is there a possibility I could email and ask specifically not to be interviewed that day, or even the morning of that day?

Thank you in advance!
I suggest that if you are invited to interview you should then cancel the driving test. I suggest this because the driving test may add stress and or tire you or distract you at a time when you will want to be as fresh, relaxed, and focused as you can be.

If you fail the driving test the day before your interview, you may feel demoralised. In any event, the test might run over time because of weather, traffic, car trouble, and so on. Trying to do a driving test in the morning and an Oxford interview in the afternoon would be a possible recipe for a double failure.

You can do a driving test next year. But most people only take one shot at Oxford or maximum two.

Good luck!

In an ideal situation this would be great, but I can only really take the test now as cancelling and rebooking would likely get me a test in July earliest and I need to be able to get to work.

I’m not overly stressed about the test as I’ve taken it before, I failed in the last 30 seconds and now I’m a much better driver, I’m just wondering if they have any lenience to being emailed and interviewing me on a different day.

Thanks for the reply though!

OK, if taking your driving test and a pre university job are more important to you than which university you go to, go right ahead!

so there's 0 public transport in ur country?
If they interview over several days for the course then there is no harm in asking. But it's up to them whether they are willing to accommodate any changes, in which case you would have to decide which is your priority.

I add that Oxford Dons try to be fair minded to all, but they are only human, and if they are told that candidate X says that he or she is too busy to have the interview on Monday and can you please put it back a day, they may look at that long list of candidates for those five to ten places and suck their teeth a bit. Oxford academics are usually try hards by nature, and they like other try hards.
I’d also add that when you get your interview slot, the entire timetable will already be drawn up. They can hardly start emailing other candidates later on saying “hey, we told you Tuesday at 10 but can we actually change that, sorry”, so you are relying on there being free slots available (which are not needed to be kept free in case of emergencies on the day). This may work out but may not and is likely to create extra stress and hassle for interviewers and admin staff.

I’d suggest that if you feel this strongly about the driving test you’d be better off emailing the college admissions office now (before the timetable is finalised) and saying that while you realise you may not be shortlisted you also have an immoveable commitment at time X and is there any chance of them taking that into account should you be lucky enough to receive an interview invitation.

Yup, all of this basically. PRSOM.

My son was supposed to be going to Iceland on an A Level Geography trip the day his Oxford PAT test was, obviously we didn’t know this when we paid for it. Lost £1300, he chose maybe getting into Oxford for the next 4 years over a 4 day holiday!
At least for me, they send you a form asking you to confirm acceptance of the interview invite. One of the questions Magdalen ask is whether you have any unavoidable commitments during your subject’s interview period. Arguably, you could call the driving test such and put down the time you need off, however, they did also say that there’s no guarantee they can’t/won’t avoid that time.

If they do clash, I suggest immediately asking the college if they can rearrange. It shouldn’t be too hard and candidates do ask for such with good reason.

I would do what Rich E says OP.He has been involved in Oxford Admissions himself.Fingers crossed on both counts..
