Finding another University - Law

Hey, so I am in year 13 and just submitted my UCAS application with three choices, and I am looking at what to put in the other two. I ideally want a middle range BBB type university and another backup, so that I have options to choose from.

I want to study Law and so far the one's I have applied to are Essex, Southampton and Surrey. Essex have already got back to me with a conditional offer of CCC, and with my reference & everything I believe or well hope I will get some more contextual offers, but either way my predicted are BBC. I live in the southeast and I want to go somewhere where I can get some independence but still be about an hour and a half drive away should I need to come home like birthdays and stuff, however I have already ruled out quite a few options- any in Brighton, Bristol, Canterbury or London are not an option because of various reasons such as reputation, not liking the area or it being too expensive to live there. To be honest Southampton is a bit of a stretch for me due to the journey.

The factors that are really important to me are accommodation (due to personal reasons I need an ensuite and a parking space), Employability and what opportunities unis have for law specifically, and what activities there are to do- nightlife, weatherspoons you know and some stuff to do in the day too. Two I am considering are University of Hertfordshire and University of Suffolk, but I don't know too much about these ones. Then again I haven't seen Surrey in person either I just liked a lot about it online.

If anyone could tell me more about these three universities or ones in the area that I haven't mentioned as well as what they are Like I would really appreciate it, thanks.

Hi @please help me x

It's great to hear you are considering studying a degree within our Essex Law School at the University of Essex!🥳

Our LLB Law course will provide you with rigorous academic training in the discipline of law and enables you to develop an approach to the discipline so you can see each subject area as part of a whole. You'll also have the opportunity to not only develop a critical awareness of the nature of law within its social, political and economic contexts and learn legal rules, but also consider the function of law in society, the philosophy of law, policy issues and law reform.🏫

It may be worthwhile whilst considering your university options, to look into our exciting Essex Law Clinic volunteering opportunities that you would be able to get involved in at the University of Essex!👍️

Student volunteers part of our Essex Law Clinic, get to work on real-life cases and be responsible for delivering free legal advice to vulnerable members of the community. This unique experience gives students the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience working on legal cases and develop their skills and interests in various areas of law, for example, housing, immigration, family, or employment law. You can find out more about this exciting opportunity here- Working in the Clinic | University of Essex

Hope this is helpful!😊

Hi @please help me x,

I see that you are considering the University of Suffolk (UOS) for law which is great considering your desires. I know quite a few people from Southeast England, such as Canterbury, that are currently studying at the university and they believe it is within good distance to home and visit often. There are various options regarding accommodation at the UOS, in which you can have a look here to give you an idea of what would suit you best e.g. the Athena accommodation has student parking: https://www.uos.ac.uk/accommodation/

The LLB Law course course aims to develop students into employable, career-ready graduates, in which Law students undertake professional placements and have the option to study abroad. The law course team like to use an innovative, fresh approach when teaching, which includes standard formal written examinations but also incorporates alternative assessments such as case studies, portfolios, oral presentations, and advocacy exercises.

We have a Legal Advice centre in which you would learn how to apply your legal knowledge from the beginning of your first year advising real clients under supervision and will have opportunities to hone your courtroom skills in our realistic mock courtroom! In order to ensure the best examination results possible for students, the university utilises a cutting edge ‘block’ model of teaching meaning you will study one module at a time in focused four-week teaching periods unlike other universities where you do multiple at a time and become overwhelmed.

I would advise attending one of our open days to get a better feel of the university; we have an upcoming one this Saturday. If you want to know anything more about the LLB Law course or the University of Suffolk feel free to ask!
