Transferring to a different uni AFTER Second Year - What would be my options?

I've been studying on a film course for the last year and a half, now halfway through my second year and I feel like I'm not getting everything I want out of the course and might be better off finishing my degree at a different university. My main issue is I feel I'm not getting enough practical experience/opportunities through the course. I'm currently looking into alternative universities to continue studying but I don't know what my options are, what is the likelihood another uni would let me start as a second or third year? (I can't afford to start from first year all over again). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would think this is very slim as you would have completed different modules to the ones on their course.
You would need to contact universities directly to find out for sure

Would you want to continue to study film elsewhere?

If so then you should be able to find a university with a more practical course willing to take you into year 2 if you complete 2 years of your current degree and have a good portfolio/showreel (even if that’s put together outside your studies)

I assume it would be on a case by case basis depending on the university, yeah. Thank you for the input.

Hi @Dan8876 ,

It's so important to ensure that you are happy at university so if you feel this would be the best option for you it is worth looking into.

I would say that the best people to talk to would be your academic advisor/personal tutor if you have one of these as they are really good with things like this and will likely have seen lots of people that are in a similar position and can give you the best advice.

You could also speak to the help team at your uni as they should also be able to help you!

Or, it might be an idea to look into which university you may want to join and call up their enquiries team and ask them what their policy is on this and then you will know which, if any, you can transfer to.

You may have to resit second year so it is worth thinking about if you would be willing to do this or if you would rather stay at your uni and do third year. Having more practical experience is always a good thing so it sounds like a reasonable reason to want to move!

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Hi Lucy, thank you for you response. I'm still researching which universities I might want to transfer to but in the mean time I will try and get in touch with admissions to see what my options are. I would be willing to re-sit second year if necessary the only option I can't pursue is restarting from first due to student finance.

Hi!! I'm currently in the exact same boat as you, I'm in my second year and i'm intending on completing this year at my current uni and then retaking second year at Sussex (I'm gonna be doing the same course) its definitely possible! I've already talked to lecturers from Sussex (I even was able to have a zoom meeting with one of the main lecturers there to discuss it) and for most creative courses it is very possible to transfer for second year you just have to contact the department of the uni. I hope it goes well for you!!

Thank you so much for your response, I know this is a fairly niche situation I'm just happy to know someone has gone through the same process and sorted it out. Hope it goes well for you too!
