NHS LSF and TDAE form for placement

Hi,
I start a 3 month placement soon which is around 2 and a half hours from where I live, I dont fancy travelling 5 hours a day there and back so I'll be staying in the area that my placement is close to.

I was wondering if anyone has successfully done this and got reimbured, like hotels, Airbnb's or anything and got their money back because I don't want to spend alot of money to not get it reimbursed. Thanks!

Ask your department what the system is for getting claims signed off and read the following:

There is a limit for what you can claim back per night for accommodation. It might be best to look for an apartment on booking.com or airbnb so that you can cook instead of living off takeaways for three months. My DD has successfully claimed for her extra travel and accomm for her placements.

hey, I'm currently in the same position.
I was advised by LSF the following;

yes you can claim for temporary accommodation it is limited to :

£82.50 per night + mileage and or public transport and parking whilst you are there for the commute to and from your placement.

use official websites like booking.com or direct to the hotel/ companies website. the invoice needs to have your name, the dates, amount and full address and business name of the accommodation on it to be able to claim.

must be hotel, bed n breakfast, apartments that are commercial.

you cannot use Air bnb or other non official websites they will reject these and will not reimburse.

non commercial places like friend, family ( not parents ) or non business addresses like serviced apartments at £37.50 per night. ( haven't used this so not sure the process of proving this).

^ the air bnb advise was given by NHS LSF however this may have changed. i was advised a month ago

They allow you to claim more frequently for this you don't have to wait till after your placement has finished as this can increase your outgoings temporary. i'm currently claiming every 4 weeks

you have to give proof that you are paying for permanent accommodation in another place at the same time. i provide my rental agreement as proof.

had no issues claiming back but it does take a while because its not just mileage so on average i'm waiting 4-5 weeks for payments to be reimbursed from the day i submit the claim. 🙂

in general i've found hotels cheaper, some come with breakfast and dinner deals. failing that making sure they have a microwave to use or a kettle in the room to make food.
my placement is 1 hour 45 away and i have 25 hours a week ive been getting a hotel 1/2 nights per week. roughly £45 a night. travel lodge have a budget nights searcher. ive been booking with these and planning my placement days to go on the cheapest days.

Thanks for this, this was very helpful.

Just to clarify on the Airbnb issue, the NHS TDAE leaflet says you can claim Airbnb:

"Accommodation booked through online platforms such as Air B n B or similar. This will normally be regarded as commercial accommodation and students can be reimbursed up to £82.50 per night. The exception to this is accommodation advertised on online platforms which the student then books through informal, offline arrangements. This will be regarded as non-commercial accommodation and students will only be able to claim up to £37.50 per night towards their costs"
