Eligibility

I’m applying for MSc Occupational Therapy pre registration at Sheffield Hallam. I am currently living in England but my previous address history have all been in Northern Ireland. I have tenancy contract, can show my child’s nursery enrolment and GP registration to show I live here permanently other than study purposes. Am I eligible for student finance England loan such as tuition and maintenance based on my residency? Can a rep confirm this please.

Hi Jenamana,

We wouldn't normally ask for this kind of evidence, if you are permanently resident in England you should be eligible for the full package of support.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi there. When did you move to England and when does your course start? Thanks, David

I recently moved just this month and the course starts mid January

Hi there,

Have you moved to England for the purpose of study and have you had any finance from Student Finance Northern Ireland in the past?

Thanks, Drew

Hi
No, not for study, I relocated with my family (my husband and child). My husband is starting work in England soon and my child will attend nursery here from next month. I do not have any past finance from Student finance Northern Ireland, but I did make an application wrongly which I will withdraw (I have not received any award/money from SFNI ever)

Thank you for confirming that. Can I also just check, have you tried to make an application yet? Does the system allow you to apply online or have you not attempted this yet? Thanks again, David

No I haven’t made an application yet but I have got the paper application because I was advised I may not be able to make an online application for Student Finance England as I attempted one with SFNI. Could I proceed with the paper application?

Thank you. In this case, you need to apply under SFNI for funding. If you only moved to England this month and the course starts in January then you have not lived in England for long enough outside of study to be eligible to apply for this type of funding. Just as an example, if you were to move this month, live in England until next year and apply for September 2025 start, then you would be eligible for SFE but as you only have a few months residency you still would fall under the SFNI category. Thanks, David

What does this mean” I would fall under sfni category”? I don’t have any ties to NI after I moved nor received any funding from them.

This means that for your course starting in January you still need to apply under Student Finance Northern Ireland. Regardless of if you had any funding from them previously, as you were last domiciled in Northern Ireland you must apply to this authority for funding. Thanks, David

Can I apply to SFNI funding for the first year(postgraduate tuition only funding) then change to Student Finance England for the second year(undergraduate funding with maintenance as the course is considered exception AHP course) as I would been living in England for more than a year by then? is that possible?

Hi there. This all depends on how long the gap in study would be from your Undergraduate to your Postgraduate course, would you be taking any time out in between these or continuing straight after? Thanks again, David

This is for the same course. Can I switch awarding body while on the same course?
SFNI once told me it was available for postgraduate funding but for Student Finance England it’s eligible for undergraduate funding as it’s a healthcare course

Hi there. What is the full name of the course and the length of this? Usually if there are different funding types being offered you would need to reapply for that different funding i.e applying Postgraduate after completing your Undergraduate year but if you can confirm the course details and start dates I can review this further. Thanks again, David

MSc occupational therapy pre registration start
January 2025 for 2 years Sheffield Hallam
So is it possible to get postgraduate funding from SFNI for the first year and then get undergraduate funding from SFEngland for second year for this same course?

Hi Jenamana,

No, you would need to stay with the same award authority for the duration of your course.

Thanks,
Calum
