Just been in touch with Cantrbury Christ Church Uni in Kent. They've also suspended their course for 2025. Do any of you know what the Long Review is? I will use google to look it up 😉 but thought I'd ask here too!

Ye Gods. I didn't realise this had gone to the point that Universities were suspending or cancelling courses. What an almighty mess.

Brighton now added to the list of those not taking anyone on this year for the PA course. Basically, sounds like they scrapping the course but they can't say that due to existing students still on the course.
Not being funny - but people who are starting this course this year - what are you thinking? Please do your research before you waste your money. The title has changed, The scope has changed. There are no jobs. There is no respect. You are sensible, educated graduates. Do your research.

Yes and no . Some royal colleges came out before Leng eg RCGP and said no to PAs
RCR came out afterwards and said no radiation requesting at all . Other specialities are putting out their scopes now, based on Leng

Oh ok, you're describing something new and different to what I had heard about. Thank you for explaining.

Yes. Reading have confirmed that the 25/26 Course is on hold for 25/26. Meaning it is cancelled for this year as there is no time to do what they state below.

Quote:

Course Name Change:
The university anticipates changing the name of the MSc Physician Associate/MSc Physician Associate programme following the Leng Review.

Career Outcomes Review:
The university is also reviewing the information on career outcomes associated with the course.

Awaiting Guidance:
The university is waiting for guidance from the General Medical Council, which accredits the program, and the government on the recommendations from the Leng Review.

Impacted Students:
All current and prospective students who have received an offer for the program will be informed of any key changes made to the program.

And remember - Reading is one of the main PA training courses

Here are the lies being stated on the BNU Website about this course:
"Upon graduation you can progress to work as a Physician Associate in a range of clinical environments in Primary and Secondary care, including GP surgeries, hospital inpatient wards, and A & E departments. You can expect to work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team alongside doctors, GPs, physicians and surgeons. Most of your time will be spent working in hospitals or GP surgeries. Home visits may also be required"

Some corrections they need to make:

New name is Physician Assistant (Reading Uni have suspended their PA course and will be changing the name to Assistant and changing the curriculum as per the recommendations)

NO - you cannot work in GP surgeries after graduation any more. A PA has to have 2 years experience in secondary care before being eligible to work in GP

A&E also not a viable graduate destination for PAs due to scope

PAs cannot prescribe, order certain tests, triage patients, see undifferentiated patients or diagnose. A HUGE change in scope. Factor this in when looking at career prospects

UWE has closed their course for 2025. This is now the SIXTH university to close this dead-end course:

Chester (last year)
Sheffield Hallam
Reading
UAE
BSMS
UWE

Others will follow suit. If you have applied for this course, do your research and run. There is a reason these 25K courses are closing. The job title and scope for PAs has changed as per Leng recommendations which have been accepted by the NHS and the government. Please do not waste your money.

The national pay scales force hospitals to pay newly qualified PAs more than locally employed doctors with two years experience. About 50% of this years F2s can't find training posts so are going to be unemployed in a few weeks time. Next few years is likely to be the same.

So why would any hospital create new PA posts or fill existing posts when a PA leaves?
