Help with choosing what to study at university

Hi guys, I am a student living in Scotland and I am at the stage of applying to Universities this year. Currently I am at college doing applied science level 6 and going to be sitting the exams next May for Higher Biology, Chemistry and Maths hoping I'll achieve the grades. I have always been interested in the healthcare field but I am uncertain of what I want to do. I am definitely not looking into Medicine or Dentistry as I know they are too competitive and I want to try to get into Glasgow University or like somewhere near Glasgow. I am thinking of Pharmacy, Child nursing but am not sure can someone please help asap. Thanks

You will need some shadowing experience and public-facing work/volunteering experience for any healthcare course. Shadowing experience will also help you decide if a particular role is right for you or not. Consider taking a gap year to get these in place before you apply.

Thanks for your comment, I have done a foundation apprenticeship in health and social services level 6 which I have done a lot of placements in hospital for radiography as they had that in option but unfortunately due to some personal reasons I can't do radiography and I do want to go to University next year.

Even if you can't do radiography it still counts as work experience as you would have experience in transferable skills

Nursing is a fantastic career, I’d certainly recommend you to look into it and get some experience. However, there are so many other careers in healthcare! Optometry, podiatry, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy… Have a look around and see what you fancy.

In Scotland, there is a particular need for both adult and mental health nurses, but this can change. I was told that child nurses are really struggling to get employment in Scotland just now, this too can change by the time you qualify.

Regardless of what you choose, best of luck!
