Dance GCSE

Hi, a few months ago I’ve moved into year 10 and I chose dance GCSE because I like dance (well, I thought I did). I am NOT flexible whatsoever and everyone else in my class can do all the tricks like doing the splits, getting their leg up to their head and stuff like that and I’m the only one who can’t. I think that everyone in my class doesn’t like me because of my low ability, I don’t think my teacher really likes me either because of it. I don’t know what to do, every time I have dance on my timetable my anxiety gets so high and I’m just constantly anxious and scared about not being good enough, or what actions I’m going to have to do next in dance. I just hate it now and I don’t want to do it anymore but i can’t change it to something else anymore because I don’t think my head teacher would allow it. Does anyone relate to this or have any advice at all? I just feel like I’m alone in this and everyone else who has chosen GCSE dance can actually dance and won’t relate to this, but if anyone does, please let me know so that I know I’m not alone? Thank you.
Hi! I didnt do GCSE dance but i can give you some general advice 🙂
The first thing I woulg suggest you do is to talk to someone at school about this (or send them an email) and ask them what your options are for the subject. You could speak directly to your dance teacher depending on how they are generally, or if you think they’ll not understand properly then maybe someone with pastoral responsibilities like a head of year or form tutor.
What grade are you working at, if you’ve been given one? If your not doing well in the subject from that angle and youre not enjoying it then mention that to someone at your school because whilst it is late to swap a subject and you’d have to catch up there may be an alternative they’re willing to offer depending on their specific policies on this kind of thing.
A couple of people in my friend group (including me) sat out one subject at gcse for one reason or another. I ended up not going to pe anymore and being allowed to do homework instead due to my situation in school. One of my friends dropped computer science and instead was set work for English because he was struggling with that. Im not suggesting you take either of those options but im just letting you know that things like this do happen in schools so they may be things your school can suggest if you’re struggling to the point you dont want to take the class anymore- or they can help you integrate into the class better. You could also try and improve your dancing outside of school if it’s something you enjoy and want to get better at.

Thank you for your advice, I really appreciate it. I have thought about asking someone at my school if it’s possible to swap my dance GCSE to a different subject but I don’t think that’s possible as they are kind of strict at my school…I don’t really need dance as a subject to get into a particular college that I want in the future, I just chose it for fun but it’s really not that great (for me). But I’m just worried about asking as the answer will probably be a no.

Maybe dont phrase it like that. Speak to a member of staff more concerned with pastoral (head of year/house depending on how it works for your school or a form tutor or anyone like that) and explain that you’re struggling with the class and it’s making you anxious every time you have it. That way they should hopefully try and support you- whether they suggest swapping out the subject depends on the school but they might just have a word with your teacher about what could make it easier. Hope that helps 🙂
