Reading Firm Choice Scheme

Hey,
Im looking to apply for Psychology Bsc at UoR with the firm choice scheme however my predicteds aren't up to par with the AAB requirement. Currently, I'm working at a BBC or ABC. Am I out of luck? Does the firm choice scheme allow my predicted to be lower?

Hi @professional359

I hope you're doing well.

Thank you so much for your question, it is great to hear that you are hoping to apply to the University of Reading!

I would recommend checking out the What offer will I get? page here in order to see what your offer might look like. There are other factors which can be taken into consideration, such as if you have done an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or if you might receive a contextual offer.

Generally I would say it's definitely worth a go applying, and also probably advisable to apply for some other universities which have lower entry requirements which might match your predicted grades more closely. This will ensure you have a fall back in case the firm choice scheme doesn't quite match your predicted grades.

It would be a good idea to contact the admissions team as they may be able to offer you some more personalised advice: [email protected].

I hope this has been helpful! Please feel free to ask us any more questions if you have them.

Hi, I wonder if you could help me.
I applied to Reading for the BioMed Foundation course, and I've received a conditional offer to join the main programme (non-foundation) if I achieve grades BBC.
I'm predicted ABC but worried I'll realistically achieve ACD. I really want to make Reading my firm choice and would prefer to take the main 3 year course, but I don't want to jeopardise anything by accepting the 3 year course and then only achieving ACD. Would I still be eligible for the firm choice scheme if I do what has been suggested by the Uni and change my course to the main programme?

Hi @KikiVoss

I hope you're doing well.

Thank you so much for your question, I can understand why you are unsure what to do as this is definitely a difficult situation.

As far as I am aware the firm choice scheme would still apply in this scenario. I believe that it applies for any course which is eligible for the firm choice scheme. It should mention this on your course page which I have linked here. There is also a useful page for checking what offer you are likely to get here.

I would recommend reading through your offer really carefully to see if it details anything about the firm choice scheme in there. I would also suggest contacting the admissions team: [email protected] to get some clarification about this.

If you are concerned about not meeting your offer, there is still plenty of time to try and give yourself a chance at achieving a higher grade than you are expecting. It might be a good idea to speak to some of your teachers in the subjects you are expecting lower grades in to see what areas they would recommend you consolidate, and then revising these areas. I always found flashcards and practice papers really helpful when I was in sixth form. There are lots of pre-made flashcard sets online for lots of subjects so utilising these would be a good way to save time whilst still getting revision in.

I hope this has been helpful! Please feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Hi Hattie,
Thanks so much for responding, it's really helpful.
As I really want to make Reading my firm choice I'm going to stick with the foundation course knowing I'll definitely get a place. If my results are better than expected I'll ring on results day to see if there's still space on the the main course. If there is it'll be a bonus rather than stressing myself out trying to achieve something that might be a stretch.
I appreciate all your help.
