I have one more choice left to put on my UCAS application, i’m looking to do interior design and can’t pick between york st john, arts university bournemouth and university of brighton. Which uni would be best in terms of education, recognition in interior design fields and location?

Hi @sophia66
I'm a current student at Brighton so I thought I could give a bit of insight about what its like to study here!

We don't offer a interior design undergrad but we do have 2 very close options

Our 3D design and craft course is about creating objects and products such as furniture. Previous students have gone on to work at places like Habitat and IKEA!

We also offer a Interior architecture course where students have gone on to work in set design and gallery curation!

Our Art and design courses at Brighton were ranked joint 8th in the UK and in the top 100 globally by the QS World University Rankings® 2023

Brighton is an amazing location imo. It's one of the main reasons I chose here.
We are surrounded by some of the most beautiful nature, from the seafront only 15 mins away from campus to the South Downs if walking in nature instead of rocks is more your style 😂. We are also one of the sunniest campuses in the UK! We have lots of pubs and bars in the city as well as a massive library and lots of independent cafes and restaurants so lots of inspiration all around you.
The Mouslecoomb campus (where you would study) has The Venue which is our student bar where there are always events going on. There are also loads of bars close to the campuses and in the city centre. We also have many nightclubs in the city and by the seafront as well as the gay club Revenge. Most clubs and quite a lot of bars have student nights/hours and quite a few have student themed events at the beginning of the year.

I hope this helps!

Hi there,

That's great to hear that you're considering a creative course at uni! Attending open days for the universities that you are considering would be my top tip on how to get a feel for the universities, cities and accommodations... this also allows for you to chat to current student and tutors of the courses that you're applying for. Have you considered us? Details about our Interior Design course can be found here. We also have a few open days coming up which can be found on our website.

Good luck for choosing a uni that's right for you, I know that it can be a daunting process. I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Hi there!

Glad to hear you're considering York St. John! I'm a current third-year at YSJ, studying psychology. Unfortunately, this means I can't advise too much on the specifics of interior design, but I know some highlights!

Small Cohorts - YSJ aims to keep class sizes as small as possible to make sure you get more time with your lecturer, this especially applies to courses with practical elements, like interior design!

Real-Life Experience - YSJ works with small businesses in and around York. You'll get the chance to work with interior designers across the city with live briefs set by them. You'll also be encouraged and supported to enter national design competitions, and you'll have the opportunity to go on some trips, such as our recent trip to the Manchester Runway Visitor Park to see Concorde. This means you leave with more than just a degree - you'll have real-world experience too!

Degree Show - at the end of your third year, we hold a degree show. This is where you'll get to show off your work to regional industry partners and businesses, which is an amazing network opportunity!

More generally, York St. John was just ranked the University of the Year for Social Inclusion. We have lifelong career support via Launchpad, our careers support team. Once you graduate, you're entitled to their support for life! We have great well-being services, with dedicated well-being and disability practitioners on campus.

Also, I just wanted to flag, that we're holding an Application Support Session for incoming students. I'll link the page here in case you are interested!

There's a lot more I could write here, but for now, I've just given you some of the highlights! If you have any other questions, let us know and we'll do our best to help!

Hi there @sophia66, I am a student at Kingston University 🙂 Kingston's Interior Design course is ranked No.1 in UK for interior design (Guardian University League Tables 2023) and No. 1 in London for the Art & Design subject area (Times Good University Guide 2024) 🤗

The university just a 20min train ride from central London and is located along the River Thames, surrounded by the lush greenery of south-west London! We also have amazing open access Workshop Facilities (eg. 3D metal work, print making, photography...) that anyone from any course can practice in. I would highly recommend visiting us on one our Open Days if you have the chance.

I hope this helps and feel free to ask me any questions about life in Kingston 🙂
