University of Southampton or Surrey?

hi, I've received an offer to study children's nursing (bsc) at uni of Surrey, and an offer to study adult and children's nursing (masters) at uni of Southampton. these were my top two choices, and now that i've gotten offers from them, I have no idea where to go. I live 30 mins away from Surrey by car and 1 hour 30 mins away from soton by car.
anyone who's been to either of these unis, how did you find the experience and what are the pros and cons of each place? (bonus if you study nursing)
thanks
Hi @megamind1

Congratulations on your offers! It is completely understandable being torn between 2 places to study- have you visited either place for open days or just to wander around? I would definitely recommend doing so, so you can talk to current students (for your course and outside of it) and start to visualise yourself there!

I have been studying at Southampton for 4 years and I have really been enjoying my time here- both the university and the city itself! A massive pro to Southampton is that there are 2 major universities in the city and so it is a very student friendly city in terms of socialising and finding things to do! Do you have any specific questions about Southampton uni or the city itself?- I'll be happy to answer any!

I don't study nursing but study medicine so I am very familiar with the Southampton General Hospital (where you'll be on your clinical attachments if you choose Southampton). The hospital itself is incredible- it's the main tertiary care centre in the whole region and therefore, it is a really nice hospital and is big with almost all specialities being based here. It is also where you will find a lot of complex patients due to it being such a specialist hospital with transfers coming from a lot of the other hospitals in the southern region.

Please do reply to this if you have any specific questions!

Hello Megamind1,

It's great to see that you are considering studying at the University of Surrey.

I definitely agree with the Southampton rep that you should visit both universities and way up the pros and cons afterwards. I would also say that looking at the course and its structure for each university and comparing the two is important (to see which nursing course you like better). Is there anything in particular you are looking for when it comes to university? when it comes to social and student life, the course, campus, cost of living etc This can help to narrow things down.

As a Student at Surrey I would say that my experience has been positive overall. I like the fact that Surrey is a campus-based university and that everything on campus along with the town centre is within a suitable walking distance. I also find that for my course the lecturers and staff are really supportive. Guildford also has a close proximity to London.

One of the cons about Surrey however, is that I will admit that Surrey can be an expensive place to live in compared to other many other places.

Let us know if you have anymore questions.

Best regards,
Imane

Hi, a masters course is a postgraduate course. Meaning that you study it once you have your initial degree. You cannot do a masters without your undergraduate degree.
I do not recommend going to the university of Surrey as there is a complete lack of support, you are left to your own devices. They had a very good score on the university leaderboards but recently it has dropped down to a bad position. Please try to venture out to somewhere else

hi, the masters nursing course at Southampton is actually an undergraduate course, which is one of the reasons why I'm leaning towards Southampton rather than Surrey.

There are integrated undergraduate masters degrees in the UK (e.g. MSci, MEng, MPhys, etc) which are formally undergraduate degrees which you can apply to from school (and which are funded through the undergraduate funding model). These are distinct from standalone postgraduate masters degrees (e.g. MSc, MA, MRes) which as you say require a prior degree.

Usually it's clearer where people refer to them as undergraduate-masters courses in some capacity or use the specific title (e.g. MSci/MEng etc) which makes it much clearer
