UOM or UOY?

Firstly, sorry if I sound ungrateful for saying this, but I am so confused about making a decision for university. I got all my offers, and my top two choices are cog neuro and psych at Manchester and psychology at York. Uom feels like a better option as the course is amazing and the reputation of the uni is also pretty good, but I already live in Manchester. Before I had applied, my mind was always set on uoy because I thought I had no chance with uom and now I'm confused because I'm not sure if I want to stay local or move away. I have been to both university open days and absolutely loved both. I have done so much research about pros and cons of both but I still do not know because I feel like if I firm one, I will feel bad about the other one. I also received offers from cog neuro and psych Nottingham and psychology at Liverpool and Sheffield.
Both Manchester and York sent me conditional offers for the same grades.
Hello! Firstly, congratulations on 5 offers! You don’t sound ungrateful either, so don’t worry. It’s totally understandable to be torn between two universities.
My advice would be to not rush into firming and insuring any choices, you have until June to do it, especially if you’re evaluating your options.
Is there one of the two unis you can really *see* yourself at (if that makes sense)?
If it’s truly a 50/50 split, take your time before you firm, there may be a lightbulb moment before the deadline where you realise where you want to firm!

Hi,

Congrats on all your offers! I agree with the other poster - you have plenty of time to make your choice! If you have time to go to a post offer visit day I'd recommend that - you can chat to the department and current students and get an even better insight compared to open days which are more general 🙂
Hi there,

Congratulations on your offers!

I think the first step in making this decision would be to decide whether you want to live at home for uni, or move away. You would be saving more money living at home to do things you enjoy, but moving away would give more independence and let you explore a new place for 3 years so it really depends what sort of thing you want. There's plenty of time to decide though!

Even if you make a decision but then change your mind, you can usually swap your firm and insurance up until you have to enroll after results day.

I recommend going to offer-holder days if the unis hold those (like york said) and you can meet other potential students and more staff, see the facilities again and get to explore the city more. I originally was going to stay local for University (midlands), but went to a Liverpool offer-holder day and completely fell in love with the city!

Hopefully this helps!

Hello!

Congratulations on your offer to study at York, we'd love to be welcoming you onto campus next year!

I'm also from Manchester, and back in 2018 when I was looking at universities to study Biology I was stuck between York and Manchester as well, so I really feel for you. Ultimately, I chose York for a couple of reasons:

I fell in love with the teaching spaces for biology, the broad range of modules available, and the modern facilities were better than any I'd seen at the time.

The campus - after a few open days, I quickly realised that I much preferred campus universities over city universities. I liked the idea of everything I needed being in one place, and that once I got to campus all my classes were nearby.

Distance from home - York is about 60 miles from my parent's house, and only a couple of hours (if that) on the train. It was far enough away from home that I felt independent and no pressure to constantly go home. But it was near enough that if I had any problems, I knew I could get home quickly, or my parents could get to me.

Ultimately, it's about what's best for you. I have plenty of friends from Manchester who chose to go to uni in Manchester and they loved it. Equally, I have friends who moved miles and miles away from their parents, and that worked out for them as well.

If you'd like to ask any questions about student life in York feel free to add them as a reply to this thread and I'll do my best to answer them. You can also chat to our students and check out our @UoYstudentvlogs YouTube channel to find out more about what it's like to study at York.

I hope this helps! Hannah 😄

Hi, so my GCSE grades were 977-66665DM and my predicted grades are A (EPQ) AAB bio psych chem. My advice is to check it on the course website for specific requirements because it is usually different for most of the courses, also check if you are eligible for any contextual offers and apply! 🙂
