What, if anything, influenced your subject choice at Uni ?

I am studying to become a Bio-chemist because I wat to try and figure out why I have a a birth-defect that results in structural abnormality's, that mean I will never be able to have bladder or bowel control.
Hello!

Thanks for reaching out. I think everyone has their own reasons for going to uni, and they can be based on personal experience, personal interests, career aspirations or something else entirely.

I personally chose to study psychology because I had a teacher at sixth form who inspired me to become really interested in the subject and what it stood for in the world. I found that I was very interested in many different branches of it, I was good at it as a result, and understood that a degree in psychology would be a good decision for me because I didn't know what I wanted to do later on, and psychology opens up a lot of different doors.

Best of luck with your studies and future in biochemistry! 🙂

I'm doing a Classical Studies degree, and in fact it wasn't my first choice (although I love it).

I was always good at languages, so when I started A Levels I was doing French, Spanish, History and Law. I quickly found that History and Law weren't for me, so I dropped them and took up Classical Civilisation because I had been a huge Xena and Hercules fan, so I figured there was some interest there.

My best grade was in French so when I started uni, I chose BA (joint Hons) French and TESOL. I had thought maybe I'd be a translator, or work somewhere like the OECD for example.

But life threw a spanner in the works - I got pregnant during my first year of uni.

As my French/TESOL course required me to spend the third year in France, I knew that wasn't going to be feasible with a young child in tow, so I had no choice but to switch courses. My other A Levels had been, as I say, Spanish and Classical Civilisation. Spanish would have had the same year abroad issue as French, so I switched to Classical Civilisation.

Ultimately then I had another kid, dropped out altogether, and then had two more kids.

I then returned to uni 13 years later and just did a credit transfer of my 120 credits so the OU, and embarked on the Classical Studies degree path.

And that, ladies and gentleman, is why my degree is Classics based. A combination of the love of Xena and Hercules 90s tv programmes, and of having had children.

Hey!

Since Primary School, I've always been stronger at reading and writing. Naturally, I ended up taking essay-based subjects at A-Level and completed my degree in English Literature.

There were other factors which were involved in my decision making such as how I study best. I have always disliked disciplines such as Maths/Science where there is generally a correct answer. English gives me a lot more freedom in terms of reading, writing and researching. My degree has also given me a lot of transferable skills!

Hi there,

I'm in my fourth year studying geography.

Since high school, I've loved everything about geography. Every new thing I learnt kept me hooked. I also had a great teacher all throughout high school and sixth form, and he very much influenced my decision to continue learning.

I wasn't and still am not sure about what I want to do in the future, but I know that I enjoy geography. Studying this gives me so many options and leaves many doors open, so I feel confident in that. My degree also had a year abroad option, so I was interested in choosing that to improve both academically and personally. It was a fantastic choice for me!

Initially went into something STEM related mostly because I generally did well in those subjects at school and otherwise a lack of imagination on my part. Later left then after working for some time, did a couple modules with the OU, on a whim did a Greek language module because it was the last year it was being offered, really enjoyed it so just kept doing more, different ancient languages because I find studying them fascinating
