Cambridge History Postgraduate Applicants 2025 / 26

Hi - saw a thread on Cambridge Postgrad History Applications from a couple years back, so I decided to do the same!

Please share which course you are applying for and what colleges you've also applied to (if you haven't selected an open option).

I'll start. I'm applying for the MPhil in Intellectual History and Political Thought, and applied to Gonville and Caius College and Darwin College.

Hey, good idea! Thanks for starting the thread. I’ve applied for the MPhil in Economic and Social History. For College’s I’ve put Sidney Sussex as my First choice and Downing as my 2nd choice. I originally had Trinity and Jesus but saw the admission statistics and changed them.

Timeline wise my application was submitted on the 17th of October. Still yet to hear back.

Any news on your application?

I only submitted my application on Thursday, so just before the course funding deadline. I don't really expect any movement for a while, and I don't expect to find out if I got accepted or not until the new year.

I hope I do get an offer - the rate of acceptance for my course is about 1 in 3 - compared with some of the other Cambridge History masters, the course is quite competitive. However, I do fancy my odds.

I applied for MPhil Modern European History at either Jesus or Pembroke on October 16th! Currently "under review" but hoping for some movement soon 😎

Has anyone had any movement? I'm not too worried by this, I think we'll now wait until after Jan 4th and the university reopens and expect something around then right?

There won't be any movement until the new year, and frankly I wouldn't expect to hear any noise until closer to February or March even.

Nothing on my side. Don’t think they’ll be any movement until the new year.

Where does one find the application statistics?

Where does one find the application statistics?

Got it from this website - they take the data from FOI Requests, so it should be accurate: https://www.admissionreport.com/university-of-cambridge/mphil-political-thought-and-intellectual-history#:~:text=1%20in%203%20applicants%20to%20this%20programme%20received%20an%20offer.

This one shows the acceptance rate for my course (intellectual thought), but if you type in your course in the search bar, you should see the acceptance rate for yours. Good luck!

My application just moved to decision pending. Another person that applied for the History PhD in the general megathread said they moved to decision pending yesterday. Might be worth checking the status of your application.

When did you apply? Apparently the department makes offers / rejections around the 6 - 8 week mark of your application being sent in (that's what I got from the megathread)

I also applied for PTIH back in the 4th of October and I'm still in Dept. review :/

Reply 17

Still in departmental review, but I am strongly aware that different strands have their own timings regarding admission... I applied on October 16th for MPhil Modern European History, but will post here when the status changes to DP.

I applied for MPhil Modern European History and still on department review. Should this be worrying? It's been well over the 8 weeks review time.

Cambridge states applications will take up to 12 weeks to be considered by the department, so you shouldn't worry for now. Besides, individual applications are reviewed faster / slower depending on factors outside your control. Don't forget that staff have just gotten back from the Christmas holidays, and I doubt that most of them would've been looking at applications during the three weeks they were off.
