3rd Year University of Sheffield Computer Science and AI student - Ask Me Anything :)

Hi Everyone!

I am Jivanthika, currently a 3rd year Computer Science and AI student at the University of Sheffield. I am on the integrated masters so have around 1 and 1/2 years left. I have had a great time so far on the course and at university. I am also the vice president of the women in engineering society and I play tennis whenever I can find time and the weather isn't too bad.

I stayed in Allen Court in my first year as I preferred staying close to the Diamond and the city centre and then in my second and third year I moved into private student accommodation. I find that the city of Sheffield has lots to offer students and I love that it is student friendly with discounts and deals. Sheffield also has one of the lowest cost of living averages in the country.

If you have any questions about computer science, university life, fees and funding or literally anything else, just reply to this post

hope you all have a great day

Hey!!

I’m feeling a bit confused and would really appreciate some advice on choosing between the University of Leeds and the University of Sheffield for Chemical Engineering.

Leeds seems to have stronger industry links, is ranked higher for Chemical Engineering, and has a more international reputation, which is important to me since I’m planning to do a master’s abroad. I’ve also found that Leeds offers more research opportunities in general, which is appealing.

However, I’m really drawn to some aspects of Sheffield. For example, they have The Diamond, which includes advanced facilities like the pilot-scale processing plant. Their course also has a biological focus, with modules like Introduction to Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, and Drug Delivery Systems. Since I’m considering a master’s in bioengineering or biotechnology, I find this really interesting.

Sheffield also runs initiatives like the Global Engineering Challenge and participates in Engineers Without Borders, which involve cool, real-world projects. I’m not sure if Leeds offers similar opportunities in their program.

any advice on what factors I should prioritize?

Thanks so much!

Hello, I'm contemplating between Computer Science with AI, and normal Computer Science. As someone who's doing computer science and ai what do you think is better?

Hiya,

In terms of general factors on what you should prioritise I believe different projects and initiatives that you join can really round out your abilities and gives you things to write about in your CV and form meaningful connections with other like-minded people and employers. Sheffield is very focused on engineering co-curricular activities and has a wide range of projects for you to join like building drones to developing railway train.

I would also say the specific modules is important so compare the different modules and find out which one appeals to you more and if you have the ability to take any optional modules that you find interesting to.

In terms of research, I am currently a 3rd year computer science student and over the summer break I participated in the SURE scheme offered by the university. This scheme allows you to partner with a partner in any department and you undertake a 6 week research project on your choice. You can either propose a topic of your own or reach out to professors and see what they are working on. So this is something if you are interested in research too.

Sheffield also has strong industry connections and has several careers fairs throughout the year and a dedicated team and services to help you refine your CV and find opportunities for year in industry.

Also, in terms of general life, pick the uni where you can see yourself living in the city as well. This is where you will be for the next 3/4 years maybe so it is important that you feel comfortable and enjoy living there.

I hope this helps and let me know if you have anymore questions!

At Sheffield, the way the course works is that Computer Science and Computer Science with AI have the same modules for the first 2 years, apart from a team project in second year. Our third year is where we have optional modules where we can specialise in more AI related modules.

I would have say have a look at the structure for the courses they do and how AI heavy they are and what the modules are like. I do not think there is a lot of difference and you can always switch courses once you are at university and you can still take AI modules even if you are on the regular computer science course in your final year. So it is completely up to you!

I hope that helps and let me know if you would like to know anything else
