How would completing student finance work if I secretly plan on moving out?

I’m curious about when my dad does my student finance to input all the evidence of his salary, would he have to select whether or not im staying at home for uni? Since im planning on moving out secretly without them knowing when my uni course starts and so on my ucas applications I put down that I’ll not be living at home for my 3 years of uni. Is getting student finance for a person that won’t be living at home not possible without my parents finding out ? 😣

Hi @SaveMeOnceMore

Firstly huge congratulations on receiving a place at university - what are you planning to study?

Secondly, that's great you have identified that moving to university is the right thing for you. It really depends on how far away from home your university is. For example, at my university (Uni of Salford) we have a wide range of commuters, students living on-site in halls of residence, or in local student housing who have moved away from home, some students have moved from overseas. It really depends on what is best for you to make the most of university and enjoy the experience.

That is a really good question. From the SFE website, it doesn't look as though parents are given the details on whether their child is planning to live away from home or at home during term time.

However, the best way to confirm this would be to speak to SFE directly. Here are their contact details:

It would be worth thinking about whether once you know how much Student finance you are entitled to whether you can afford rent and bills living away from home without any parental support if you are concerned your Dad might not be able to afford or wish to support you living away from home.

If you're concerned about your Dad not reacting positively to hearing you wish to move away from home to study it is worth being prepared to answer any concerns that he might have for example how you might afford food or how you will look after yourself, so having possible solutions might put him at ease. If you're worried about breaking the news it is worth having a chat with the pastoral teams at your university and/or college (if you're currently studying) as they often have good advice to give.

Then if you do need support with finding accommodation it is worth getting in touch with your chosen university as often (like at Salford) they will have a list of reputable local accommodation providers and advice on what to look out for when finding somewhere to live. If you're worried that your Dad won't see you moving away from home to study positively then it is worth having a chat with the pastoral teams at your university and/or college (if you're currently studying).

I hope that helps a little, feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Good luck at university!

Lucy ☺️

Your UCAS application is separate from your student finance application. On your student finance application, you could tick the box to say that you will be living at home and then let your parents submit their household income evidence. Once the evidence has been assessed and the loan amount confirmed, you could change your application to living away from home to get the higher amount.

Thank you very much for letting me know I shall keep this in mind!
