Change in circumstances

Hello, so just before I started my first year of my nursing degree I split up with my daughters dad.. fast forward to now I’m a quarter of the way through my 2nd year

I currently get full maintenance loan, ccg and NHS bursary I have a 4 year old (that’s not in school yet she starts next September) and a 2 year old so both need full time childcare due to placements and studying

I am getting back with my daughters dad as we’ve worked things out and I want to move in with him he is on a good wage, will they take this in to effect immediately for my student finance or will it be from my 3 year? I can’t carry on my nursing degree if they take my ccg away from me and we wouldn’t be able to afford the childcare for both children for the rest of my academic year. Would only be entitled to 15 hours for my eldest daughter as she’s 4 and we can’t get any funded hours for the 2 year old as I’d have to be working a certain amount of hours a week to claim the 15 hours which I can’t do when I’m on placement blocks

Hi @nachowaffle

Congratulations on being halfway through your second year! That's amazing, Nursing is a brilliant, but often intense degree, let alone when you have two small children to look after, so huge congrats!

That's a really good question, I would advise giving SFE a call to ask as they'll be best placed to answer I called them before I transferred to my current university and started a new degree whether I would be entitled to another three full years of funding, thankfully they confirmed I would be, which meant I knew I could move before I made the jump. SFE can also advise on whether your SFE entitlement would change, your partner would most likely need to provide proof of income if you moved in together.

Here are their contact details if you need them:
https://www.gov.uk/contact-student-finance-england

Student Finance Toolkit:
This link can help with estimates of student finance entitlements for example:
https://studentfinance.campaign.gov.uk/student-toolkit/

They will be able to talk you through it, but as you know if you do move you will need to update SFE.

Again you probably know this from already applying for student finance (so please ignore if you do) but here are details of the CCG (Childcare grant eligibility):

https://www.gov.uk/childcare-grant/eligibility

You might also find this UCAS website with helpful links to government support as well as other organisations such as Citizens Advice and Gingerbread helpful for checking you are getting everything you are entitled to:

https://www.ucas.com/applying/applying-university/students-individual-needs/students-parenting-responsibilities

Last but not least, if you haven't already it is worth checking with your university whether you're getting everything you are entitled to and if you are struggling financially whether there are for example any hardship funds you could apply for.

Best of luck! Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions.

I cant answer the student finance question but would not telling them be an option? I have two children the same ages as yours and my own ups and downs with their dad too - I may be overstepping but from personal experience I wouldn't be so quick to tell them of a change in circumstances in case that changes again and leaves you in a worse off position.

I've moved this thread to the Ask SFE forum so that an official SFE/SLC rep can advise you.

Hi there,

We would not ask for your partners household income until the following academic year. So if you are currently started the 2024/25 academic year and you were still single when you did start then your partner would need to support your application from the 2025/26 academic year.

Thanks, Drew
