Do I still have a chance for Physics at Imperial, or should I just accept defeat now?

Hello everyone, I sat the ESAT in October and I've scored horrendously (3.4 in Maths 1, 3.3 in Maths 2 and 2.7 in Physics) <- I'm 99% sure this is why I got rejected without an interview at Cambridge for natural sciences :frown:

I'm wondering if I have any hope for Physics at Imperial, as after emailing them, they told me to "wait and see how my application gets on."

I just feel so hopeless and have tried scavenging the internet to see if there's any advice online on what I should do. I'm predicted 4A*s (Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Further Maths), but I know that it means nothing to them as that's what they'll expect everyone to have been predicted/achieved. I'd like to think my personal statement is good, but then again I feel that universities that claim to be "hollistic" only really consider how well you did on the entrance exam and not much more. (I could be VERY wrong though)

If anyone has any advice it'd be highly appreciated and thank you so much for reading this rant.

Hi! I also applied to Imperial physics and Cambridge natsci. I would say to just wait and see. The ESAT was sat for engineering as well and so the average imperial physics applicant may have a different score to that of engineering/natsci at cambridge for example. I don't think Imperial will only look at ESAT score since it was the first year it was used and I personally found it much worse than NSAA/ENGAA/imperial PAT. Also don't deep it- you seem to be very hard working so you will def thrive academically at any uni. Good luck!!!

If you've already applied, then don't think too hard about it because what are you going to do about it now?

I'm in the same boat as you: rejected pre-interview from Cambridge, haven't heard from ICL. However, I've looked at Imperial's admissions statistics and I'm hopeful about my application, as Physics doesn't seem to be quite as competitive as something like engineering. This links to what anon 2 said about the ESAT being used for loads of courses.
Here's the spreadsheet of stats:

At this point there's really nothing we can do about our applications, we'll just have to wait and see. Good luck!

I'm in the same boat at you man... I am applying for Physics and I just took the ESAT today and I know I didn't prepare properly. The stress got to me. I think I will have A*A*A* predicted (maths fm and physics) when I apply in a couple of days and I have done alot of self study which I talk about in my personal statement but I don't know how bad that grade will reflect on me... I think I got a 2 or 3 tbh...

Hi, I don't suppose anyone has had a decision from Imperial?

Still waiting to hear about Maths.

Hi, in same boat too.
Have you had a decision from Imperial yet? Although I don't know whether anyone has for physics.
Jan ESAT score was not as hoped.

Thanks for this. I do hope Imperial look at the scores for Physics applicants separately after removing engineering applicants.
I just hope we hear soon. Does anyone happen to know when? (Other than before end of March, of course!)

Imperial Physics offers are expected to start coming out around early March.

Just out of curiosity, you said you hope that Imperial looks at scores of Physics and Engineering applicants separately, Does this imply that you think Engineering applicants tend to score higher than Physics applicants? Why do you think this is the case?

Thank you.
Only as trying to be hopeful as wasn't happy with ESAT score. Just overthinking, and searching for some reassurance (that doesn't exist!). There isn't anything that can be done now.
Thanks again.

I think they do separate the physics and engineering applicants as engineering is generally a more competitive course. also i assume each department only receives the scores relevant to their applications

I agree that departments probably only receive scores relevant to their applications, I'm just wondering how the ESAT scores differ between physics and engineering applicants and which score higher. But I'm not sure if there is a way to find this out anyway.

Just wondering whether you've heard from Imperial yet?

I haven't heard from Imperial yet either, applied for theoretical msci. wat was your esat, if i may ask please?

4.6 avg, applied physics MSci.
Not expecting anything with this Esat, but just want to know

Hello everyone! I didn't expect this post to act as a harbour for all my fellow ESAT victims. Unfortunately, I have not heard back from Imperial but I'm not too bothered now as I've received offers from Manchester, Durham and Edinburgh. Obviously if Imperial gave me an offer I would gladly accept, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. Thank you for replying and hopefully we all make it 🙏

but this esat isn't really bad... depending on your modules, you must be in the top 60-65 percentile. Is that not good? I think you have a fair shot if all other parts of the application are balanced!

Your Esat is not bad, heard back from imperial last week, but as far as I know only a handful of people have heard.
It’s very odd that they have not contacted all applicants yet. Maybe it’s a glitch in their system.

Thank you...just feels "not good enough". 4.3 M1, 5.1 M2, 4.3 P. Home, non-contextual, 3A* pred (M, FM & P), with 999999877776 - 9s in the right subjects, 6 in a humanity. PS all physics (& maths strengths) focussed. I say not good enough due to the competition, there are many applicants with fantastic scores & achieved grades too. It's okay though.
