Can you specialise in speech and language therapy

Hi

My sister has a passion and interest in working with children with neurodivergent conditions like autism , ADHD ect and she would love to work in a job were she's working only with those with ADHD , autism ect including adults as well as children and a colleague suggested speech and language therapy and specialise in neurodevelopment conditions.

She's done some research but can't find anything to suggest she can specialise working with only children and adults with autism ect.

Would this be possible?

Hi there,
I’m a speech and language therapy student at Manchester Metropolitan! What a fantastic passion your sister has, I have a similar one.
The course it’s self is very broad and you learn everything from individuals who are Neurodivergent, to individuals who stammer, to people who have had strokes or MS… the list is amazing! You then graduate as a Band 5 and then gain experience as a band 5 through working as a speech and Language therapist where ever you want! You could go and work in an autism, ADHD clinic? from then when you choose what you want to specialise you become a band 6!

I hope this helps,
Emily

thank you.

She's very passionate about supporting those with autism , ADHD ect because I'm autistic myself and she's seen how hard I find the world at times and she also hates the judgment we get and loves helping the children with neurodivergent conditions at the nursery she works at but she would like to specialise and has loved researching about SLT.

You are very welcome. She seems like she has a fantastic skill set for this degree!
I’m sure she would be a fantastic asset to a speech and language therapy team.
Best wishes

Yes that is a common specialism, especially when working with children. (I have worked with teenagers and adults with autism, learning disabilities and mental health difficulties in several psychiatric hospitals as an example). You are less likely to find a post working with children and adults simply because they tend to be funded separately / run by different trusts. But there are definitely pathways and services dedicated to assessing ADHD / autism in children and adults.

I am a speech and language therapist and lecturer so if your sister has any questions just let me know.

Hi @LifeisGolden

I hope you're doing well.

It is so great to hear that your sister is so passionate about this, and it sounds like she would be amazing working as a speech and language therapist in this field!

Generally, when training to do this role you will learn about all different client groups and conditions so cannot specifically focus on just neurodevelopmental conditions. However, once you have graduated and are working, you are able to find a job which focusses on any particular interest you might have.

I have personally never come across a job role which involves working with both children and adults with autism at the same time, but have seen roles with children with autism, and roles with adults with autism. This might be something where she could work with children for a while in one role, and then find a job working with adults in another role afterwards.

I hope this has been helpful!

Hattie😊
