Zoology confusion help!🙏

Was wondering if anyone had any advice on a couple things. I’m in year 13 rn and am planning to do a zoology degree next year but I am stumped for a couple things. First of all, does anyone have any great recommendations for unis to do zoology at bearing In mind I don’t want to go too far from home (live in Bournemouth) and I’m thinking of something like Bangor as the furthest a field I would like to go. Secondly what kind of course should I pick, plain old zoology or one with a year in industry or a year abroad. Thirdly as I was looking into Bangor can anyone sway me to one side on either zoology with animal management or zoology with primatology. Thankyou!!

I think Bangor is probably about the best you can get for zoology. But it really makes very little difference what course you pick at this stage. All the zoology with... programmes have the same common first year and you can easily switch between them once you have completed your first year and had a few lectures on the various different topics and know where your interests lie.

Hello @FinHughesMac,

It's great to hear you are thinking of studying zoology. I am an Ecology and Wildlife conservation student and have looked at some universities for zoology. Also, my course has modules that overlap with zoology, so I will try to provide insight into the course.

When selecting a university, you need to consider what you want from a university, as certain universities offer certain things, such as exams or no -exams, specific sports facilities, lab and field work options, etc...

Some great universities for zoology include the University of Gloucestershire, the University of Plymouth, the University of South Wales and Aberystwyth University.

Similarly, the University of Reading offers Zoology BSc (Hons), and Zoology with Professional Experience BSc (Hons).
One great reason to join the University of Reading is the high volume of local museums, which aid your studies, i often first the museums as a great tool for revision, as many 1st year modules are based around the local museum exhibitions, i have a blog which has a comprehensive list of the local museums, this can be accessed here.

I personally recommend you choose a year in the industry, as this will give you relevant career experience to include on your CV. Often, year-long placement employers offer students the opportunity to return to their companies after they have graduated, and it provides valuable connections, So it is a valuable year to include. The year abroad can be great as long as you utilise it and can gain a lot more experience, although many students struggle to settle in a different country, especially if there is a language barrier.

Similarly, the addition of animal management or primatology could advance your degree further, but I recommend you ensure you understand what they are offering and if you really like the extra modules, as they may not be essential for your learning and your future career.

I hope this information helps, and if you have any more questions, please let us know.

All the best,
Ella 😀

Hi (2nd year banking and finance student at Bangor Uni) basically zoology here is probably the best, plus we have many people doing Marine Biology, which in some classes you will be in with some of them (module mixing) I know this as I have mates who do take zoology, plus we have bloody Steve Backshall who gives lectures at Pontio about his area of expertise. Plus Bangor is a beautiful place, quite cheap, very helpful staff etc and also you will pick up on the very beautiful language of Welsh. I would definitely urge you to come to Bangor. Gobeithio bod hyn wedi helpu (hope this as helped) feel free to ask anything about Bangor uni as a whole I would gladly answer anything you may have to ask

Learning Welsh sounds like great fun! Thanks for the advice I’m definitely leaning towards Bangor at this stage of my uni picking process I only had a couple other questions like what is the nightlife like in Bangor? And where do I pick the year in industry option when apply for my course or does that happen later on?😁 Thankyou!

Hi I can’t say if Bangor does do the “year placement” for zoology, as when I applied then only offered it on very few degrees. However, there are plenty of jobs you can apply to in “zoology” in and around Bangor so I wouldn’t stress about getting a “year placement”. Double check this on UCAS though, just type in “zoology placement year” to see if they do actually offer it. Now, night life is okay, I wouldn’t say it’s good though. It’s more of a “pub town” versus a “nightclub town” the only 2 that are good are “Academi and trilogy” but if you have good mates, they can turn a bad night out to a great night out. If you’re more into your pub atmosphere then, Bangor is great for that! Nothing wrong with abit of a pub go out before you go to the clubs at a cheap prices. My recommendation would be “bar uno on Fridd site, Y Glob, Paddy’s, Bell vue and then either rascals or the new sports bar on the high street” good prices, good pints and a cracking atmosphere. Plus “academi” is probably the cheapest nightclub I have been in all my life 🤣 and probably one of the best as well. If you do have anymore questions about Bangor and how to settle in etc, please ask I am more than happy to help

Just checked for you and yes they do have a “placement year” if you do with to take this path. I am not expert in if this is beneficial to your career or not, so I am not going to recommend u do or don’t. You will have the option to do this once you complete your first semester with Bangor. (Recommended guidance) Hope this persuades you to come to Bangor, you will not regret it and plus your bank account will thank you 🤣 it’s ridiculously cheap here compared to other “uni towns” it’s quite unbelievable.

Brilliant! And yes the price of stuff is definitely a persuasion factor! Maybe see you there next September!

this is absolutely right, if you come to Bangor to do zoology you get the whole of year one to decide which area to specialise in.

and yes all our degrees are available with placement. We start to advertise information sessions about placements once you are here as they take place between year 2 and 3. You can swap to a 'with placement' at that stage and we help you fit the place into your studies and keep an eye on how you are while you're away.
