Uni of Leeds or Uni of Sheffield for Chemical Engineering?

Hey everyone,

I’m feeling a bit confused and would really appreciate some advice on choosing between the University of Leeds and the University of Sheffield for Chemical Engineering.

Leeds seems to have stronger industry links, is ranked higher for Chemical Engineering, and has a more international reputation, which is important to me since I’m planning to do a master’s abroad. I’ve also found that Leeds offers more research opportunities in general, which is appealing.

However, I’m really drawn to some aspects of Sheffield. For example, they have The Diamond, which includes advanced facilities like the pilot-scale processing plant. Their course also has a biological focus, with modules like Introduction to Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, and Drug Delivery Systems. Since I’m considering a master’s in bioengineering or biotechnology, I find this really interesting.

Sheffield also runs initiatives like the Global Engineering Challenge and participates in Engineers Without Borders, which involve cool, real-world projects. I’m not sure if Leeds offers similar opportunities in their program.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice on what factors I should prioritize?

Thanks so much!

Hey, I don't do chem engineering but I do biochemistry which involves a lot of Biotech - I am at Sheffield and it was the best decision I ever made. The city is great and you'll have an amazing time. I'd say just under half of the students here are engineers so you will make friends very quickly! The diamond is a great study space and I always point it out to people... Also, look up the Heartspace - its an engineering must-see.

100% agree! My daughter is doing her final in Journalism and she has been enjoying every minute of it since her foundation year. A great city and an internationally well-known university with Nobel laurate awarded for the invention of stainless steel!!! no wonder it is called a steel city. Amazing scholars there!
