Hello !

I am a 2nd-year commuter student; I will be commuting during my university course. I choose to commute because I prefer a quiet atmosphere and love living at home. I also have family commitments, but by commuting to the university, I can have all of these things whilst still being able to access higher education.

I highly recommend you look into your options when it comes to university, as many students end up moving back home or don't get on with their people in their dorm, so commuting can be a great way to have the best of both worlds. You get to live at home where you are most comfortable and still get a great quality education.

There are many great ways of commuting to university: the train, bus, cycling, individual car, car sharing, walking( if you live close enough) and taxis. These are all great options, and many students will use a mixture of 2 or more transportation methods to get to university. The local train station has main links into London Paddington via the Elizebh=th line and great links to other places such as Oxford. Reading station is a very large station, with many trains going to many destinations. The train station is a 30-minute walk from campus (depending on walking pace), a 15-minute bus ride, or a 15-20-minute cycle. So if you are considering commuting, there are plenty of transport options.

The question I get asked the most about commuting is whether you can still socialise. Of course, you can still socialise. I prefer to meet up with friends for coffee or study, so I can go home early. However, I know many commuters who attend evening societies and socials, and they enjoy these.

I have written a comprehensive blog about the pros and cons of commuting to university, which can be accessed here. I highly recommend commuting to university as long as your home situation is good because it saves a lot of money, allows you to be in the comfort of your own home, has no issues with flatmates, and you still gain a great education.

I hope this helps provide information about my experiences commuting and the main transport options.

Please ask below if you have any questions; we are happy to help.

All the best,
Ella 😀

Good afternoon,

It's great to hear you are planning on commuting to the University of Reading!

I also commute to the university and really enjoy the home and study lifestyle. New this academic year, there is a Commuters Society. I recommend looking out for this during Freshers Week, and keeping an eye on their society page to see if social media is added.

Additionally, there is a Commuter Students webpage and a Commuter Student Guide.

I recommend you download the freshers' UoR welcome app , which shows all student fares and events going on during freshers' week. There is also the main UoR app, called UoR student, which you will need once you have enrolled.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

All the best,
Ella
