Hey, I was wondering whether there were any 'year in industry' or 'study abroad' or 'exchange program with another university' opportunities and what would be required for these? Is there much funding support available as well?

Hello,

What degree are you interested in specifically?
Certain courses indeed offer year in industry and study abroad programmes. Lancaster University has a lot of international partnerships, so there are often opportunities to study at those institutions, however, it depends on the course.
Furthermore, there are plenty of summer schools and various programmes available to Lancaster students (e.g. at Sunway University in Malaysia, and others). Lancaster University also has a "global experience" funding program to support students who are studying or doing internships abroad in the summer.

Specific destinations, conditions and requirements of study abroad and year in industry programs depends on the course.

I hope this is helpful, let me know if you'd like me to elaborate on any of the above-mentioned points 😊

Best wishes,

I applied for the Cyber Security with Industrial Experience degree so I was wondering whether there are any extra opportunities to study abroad or at other institutions alongside the course

Hi @iive

As you applied for a "with industrial experience degree", it looks like you have the opportunity to take a 10-week industrial placement in your final year. I'm unsure if this placement has to be UK-based or if you would be allowed to look for an opportunity in another country, it may be worth emailing [email protected] to ask?

Lancaster also offers a Cyber Security (with Study Abroad) programme, where you spend your third year in a different country studying at one of Lancaster's partner universities. Some of the other computing degrees at Lancaster also offer a placement year, where you spend your full third year working in industry. Although I know it is more common to take your placement year in the UK, I have heard of people in other departments finding international opportunities- however this is up to the student to find and arrange.

For both the study abroad year and the placement year you pay reduced fees to university. I believe there is funding you can apply to for study abroad programmes (however I don't know much about it) and you would be earning a salary during a placement year.

Outside of this, you could try to arrange a summer internship at an international company, however, this would be your responsibility and outside of your university course.

You might be able to get more information by emailing the department, or reaching out to one of our computing students on Unibuddy?

Hi, I have an offer holder day for Human Geography and I’m looking forward to coming to the uni to visit and explore the city, as coking from kent I don’t know much about Lancaster as a whole.
Does anybody know any specific time slots for the offer holder events (specifically April 26th)?
Is anybody else going on their own to these offer holder events?

Thank you!

I originally applied for cybersecurity at Lancaster but I was wondering if I could change it to include industrial experience after I start at Lancaster? Or since it’s in the third year will I have time to choose wether or not to do jt

Hello!
That's super exciting you're coming to visit us for an offer holder open day! These can be a great way to see what you would typically be up to if you decide to come here! Lancaster is a lovely city to live in! It has everything you need and is a great size for transitioning to living independently.
On the day you can expect campus tours in the morning, you will then be taken to your department (LEC) for a complimentary lunch, subject talk and some practical work! It is designed to give you a better understanding of a typical day at university!

Can't wait to see you and feel free to ask if you have anymore questions,

Student Finance England has now opened applications for full-time undergraduate student finance for courses starting 2025-26.

You can apply even if you haven't had all your decisions back yet or made your firm/insurance choices. Just pick your best guess for now as you can change the uni later. It's something to tick off during the Easter holidays especially if you are going to be applying for the higher maintenance loan, which will require details of household income. You usually need to apply by the end of May to guarantee that your funding will be in place for the start of the academic year.

Hi @pinknbows,

The Cybersecurity course at Lancaster has slightly lower entry grade requirements than the "with industrial experience" course. You should be able to transfer between the two courses once you're at university dependent on your academic performance - it's likely that you'll have to achieve above a certain grade each year. For more information on this, I'd recommend reaching out to [email protected].

If you're thinking about swapping to the "with industrial experience" course once at university, I'd recommending talking to your Academic Tutor or Director of Studies early on in case there is any extra information communicated to the students enrolled on this course related to applying for industrial experience. I studied Biochemistry with a placement year and I know I received some extra careers advice in first year to prepare me for placement applications. I've heard that students find it easier to swap back off a course with additional factors like placements/industrial experience/study abroad if they decide against it than swapping onto the course last minute.

Hi there,
I was unsure as to whether the computer science BSc course goes across 2 or 3 semesters of the year?

Hi, I have an offer for Computer Science at Lancaster. I was wondering how the course is assessed? Is it coursework, exams, a mix? If it’s a mix, roughly what percent exams, and what percent coursework? Thanks!

Hi @mtracy007
Congratulations on your computer science offer!
The assessment for the computer science course will be a mix of coursework and exams, with the percentage of these changing depending on what modules you pick.
If you email the computer science department on [email protected] they should be able to tell you more about the split of coursework to exams.
Hope this helps!

Hi @LicenceM
Currently, most of our courses at Lancaster are spread across 3 terms, with the final summer term mainly consisting of exams.
