Do I request the amount I need or does SFE England decide?
Hi eyes123,

Yes, you can request the maximum amount or a specific figure when you make your application.

Thank you. I am currently studying 60 credits. What is the maximum means tested maintenance loan available for an OU student living in London?

Hi there,

OU students are only eligible for Part Time Maintenance Loan if they're doing the course distance learning due to a disability. Is this the case for yourself?

Thanks,
Claire

The London rate isn't based on where you just live its also based on where your university is. The Maximum rate for London is up to £6,674. The factors we take into account working this out is w the student is living/studying, household income and intensity of study.

Thanks,
Claire

Thank you. Does the £6,674 you mentioned apply to 100% intensity or 50% or both?

The amount mentioned is for the London rate and if your intensity is 50% to less than 66.6%

If you apply then we can confirm for definite how much you would be eligible for.

Thanks,
Claire

Thank you. I was informed that the special support loan is not available to OU (part time students). Is this correct?

Unlike maintenance funding for full time SFE students, a higher amount of PTML is not available for students who are eligible for benefits.Instead, part time students who are eligible for benefits will have part of their PTML disregarded by the Department of Work and Pensions as student income for maintenance when their benefits are calculated. This amount of the PTML is the Special Support Element. The amount of Special Support Element (amount of PTML which can be disregarded by DWP) will depend on the student’s study intensity. If the student’s study intensity changes the Special Support Element will be adjusted automatically by the system.

Thanks,
Claire
