Getting into university

Help!
Honestly I think I’m in need of some brutal honesty here. I’m in year 12 and an avid over-thinker. My a levels are history , literature and Maths. I chose subjects I enjoyed and believe I can do the best in over choosing the perfect combination for the future because I don’t know what I want to do, my first mistake it seems. The key thing I know is I’m desperate to go to university. I’m still in between things and considering everything but right now I think law or finance interest me the most. I want to go to a top university and so I’ve been researching early trying to start super curriculars / schemes / programmes etc. my GCSEs are not strong (99877766), lit + history were my 9s , got 7 in maths. Do I still have a chance at applying to those higher Russell group unis with such GCSEs if I make the rest of my ps strong? Should I resist maths or any others? Honestly brutal guidance and criticism is what I want right now!
Thank you.

relaxxxx ! totally get the overthinking thing [im the exact same], but you really are catastrophising this. its great that you're thinking about uni now - definitely do all your super/extra curriculars in yr12 if you can, as you will not have time next year. some unis place more emphasis on gcses than others - some really only care about a-level grades, and some are more preoccupied with 'good academic record'. i got 3 7s in my gcses, but am still an oxford applicant ! so do not stress yourself out so much. as long as you get excellent predicted grades for a-level, you will be just fine.

What exactly do you think is the problem here? You got 6 grades at A-A* and 2 more at B for your GCSEs, you're taking three traditionally academic A-level subjects, and you are starting to think about what you want to study at uni already.

I really am baffled as to how you think some part of the information you provided would serve as a barrier to your goals.

Hi! Thank you for your reply! Honestly I am a cereal procrastinator and a bit of a dramatic personality naturally (lol). The reason i think I’m so worried is because I’m hearing a lot about people getting rejected by some unis I’m interested in due to their GCSE results like LSE and Cambridge. Additionally I am seriously considering finance as a career field but I have chosen 2 essay subjects and maths as my alevels so I feel that’s going to make me a weaker applicant. Thus why I’m trying to see if there’s anyway I can minimise the gap between me and people who did higher in their GCSEs and chose STEM subjects. If you have any more advice I’d appreciate it but already you’ve made me realise maybe I was a bit too dramatic! Thanks!!

Thank you for your input! I’ll use the advice you’ve given, out of curiosity though, what degree are you wanting to do at Oxford? Thanks again!

Thank you.

Concentrate on doing well in your A levels and super curriculars.Tbh you might not be Oxbridge standard for finance subjects but there are plenty of other unis which you can apply to.Resitting Maths gcse will make no difference.

Thank you for the honesty! Do you think there’s anyway I could improve to get to that level or close like LSE? Any programmes or schemes? Or is it better to just lower my expectations? Thanks!

Do have a look at Oxfords Foundation Year and see if any of those criteria apply to you.Lse is very competitive too.Maybe just come down a tier unless you are at an underperforming school or have extenuating circumstances.
