Hello i’m studying Adult nursing in 2025 i’ll be 20 when i start and am struggling on what Uni to pick everything is very overwhelming: accommodation/ placements etc.

Only option i have currently is York st John although is very expensive and as i know is increasing in expense

Can anybody who does nursing in the North of england tell me about their accommodation placements and why they picked their uni?

Registered nurse here - I did my nursing degree at Chester.
I studied in Chester, so can't comment on anything related to satellite sites at Warrington or Birkenhead.

When I started my nursing degree, I'd already done another undergraduate degree. At the time, Chester only offered undergraduate nursing degrees (although they've offered pre-registration nursing masters' for a while now). I originally chose Chester (first time round) because 1) it offered the course I was after with achievable entry requirements, 2) it was easy to get back home on the train, 3) I liked the city. I then chose it for my nursing degree because by that time I was settled in Chester and moving anywhere else seemed like too much hard work when I already knew the city and the local hospital (where I worked between degrees).

Accommodation in Chester: I've had to do a bit of a search, but uni halls tend to be £110-190 per week, and private student houses averaging £135-£150 a week.

Placements: all of mine were either at the local hospital or in local community areas, accesible on foot or by public transport. The hospital is only a 20 minute walk from the university main campus/most of the student accommodation. My placements involved school immunisations, a nursing home, A&E, and various wards (care of the elderly, cardiology, day surgery, stroke, orthopaedics and vascular surgery). Other people in my cohort got other wards, operating theatres, ICU, outpatients, district nurses, GP practices, and the local hospice. Some of the students I've mentored have gone slightly further out for placement (including the orthopaedic hospital in Gobowen) but that's just because they admitted to having a car.

Hi there!

I'm a current third-year studying psychology at YSJ. I unfortunately don't know much about nursing, but I can put you in contact with admissions If you have any questions about the course, or the funding advice team if you want more information about financial support.

If you have any general questions about YSJ, I'm more than happy to help🤗. You can reply here, post on the YSJ page here on TSR, or message us, and we'll do our best to help.
