Trump was much more of a presence and a known quantity than Harris. In part a presidential election is a popularity contest and more people were more familiar with Trump.

He also had much simpler concepts to communicate, since he's happy to communicate whatever made-up BS he wants. That made his job easier.

The situation of the average American was bad in 2016 and 2020 but is even worse in 2024. People who are under pressure make drastic, short-sighted decisions. For them, the American system isn't working, and Trump represents an attack on the established system. The fact that Harris was much more likely to bring in genuinely useful and supportive reforms was harder for voters to figure out - I don't blame them.

Finally, there was the physical intimidation aspect... Trump has never made any bones about the fact that there would be civil unrest if he lost. This is a common tactic of fascists throughout history - make voters feel that their families will be unsafe if the "great, strong man" is not elected.
