Help me pick 5 university

Hello,
I’m going to be doing adult nursing in September 2025 and by january i have got to pick 5 options

currently i have only got
York st John

Could you tell me the pros and cons of YOUR nursing course at uni - including about accommodation, placements etc.

Thank You
It might work better if you explain what it is about YSJ that suits you and then other people might be able to suggest similar courses/universities that meet those requirements.

Hi @n19bth !
I'm a current student at the university of Brighton. I don't do nursing but I can tell you a bit about the course and what its like to study at Brighton!

The Adult Nursing course requirements are 112 UCAS point or BBC with a B in a science or social science. At the end of the course you will be eligible to apply for registration with the NWC! We are in the top 25% for graduate earning after 3 years and 94% of our graduates are in work or further study after 15 months!
You will complete 2,300 hours of practice-related activities over the course of your degree which includes approximately 20 weeks each year in practice placements across Surrey, Sussex and Kent.
Practice placements are 37.5 hours per week and you will be supported by a practice supervisor. A day on placement can be between 07:00 and 22:00, some weekends and some nights.

We also have a Nursing society so you can make friends with people on all years of the course and attending extracurricular lectures!

The cheapest accommodation is Varley Park, starting at £160.50 a week for a shared bathroom . The closest are Paddock Field and Great Wilkins- both are on the campus you would be studying on!

I hope this helps!
Let me know if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them!

Hi @n19bth

While I don't personally study adult nursing here at Kingston I have met people who do and can give some insight into the course, and the accommodation and placements available.

Some great things about the degree is that Kingston is top in London for nursing and in the top 10 UK for general nursing. Kingston also won two awards at the 2023 Student Nursing Times Awards.

The course is based at Kingston Hill, which is a lovely campus just 10 minutes away from the centre of Kingston on the bus, which you can get for free using the university bus. I did a post about the 4 campuses if you want to find out more An Overview of Kingston's Four Campuses - The Student Room. There are great facilities, especially for nursing, such as an award-winning simulation suite. Most nursing, midwifery and business students are based at this campus.

There are lots of great placement opportunities, with Kingston Hospital being not far from the campus. You will spend 50% of your time on placements, which is a great opportunity for hands on experience.

For accommodation your best option would be Chancellors hall or Walkden Hall which are both based on the Kingston Hill campus, so a perfect location for getting to lectures. Alternatively there is Seething Wells which would be a 20 minute bus ride, but is a more modern accommodation with more room types. Halls of residence - Accommodation - Kingston University London

I hope this is useful and if you have any questions feel free to ask

Hey @n19bth, I hope you're well?

Have you been to any open days or booked onto any? Hopefully there'll be some coming up before you have to make your decision, that way you can speak to current students on the course, ask academics any questions you have, take tours of the accommodation, see the facilities, find out about placements etc. If not, you could have a look at university websites/social media and see whether they have a virtual tour that you can take. You could also email the admissions teams and see whether they can put you in contact with the course leader to ask any questions! Best of luck with your decision, and I hope you have a fantastic time when you start your university journey next year 🤗

Hi @n19bth ,

It's great that you are coming to Uni - I've had a great time at uni so far 🙂

I am in my third year at Hallam now, I don't do nursing myself, but one of my friends does and she loves it!

The course is based at Collegiate campus which is a really nice campus and is just off Ecclesall road which is full of students and is a great, lively area!
The requirements are 112 UCAS points and it is accredited by the NMC.

This is the link to SHU's adult nursing page if you wanted to read more: https://www.shu.ac.uk/courses/nursing-and-midwifery/bsc-honours-nursing-adult/full-time#how-you-learn

This is also the profile for the course leader and if you wanted to ask any more specific questions you can click on the 'email' button and you can email her 🙂 https://www.shu.ac.uk/about-us/our-people/staff-profiles/julie-marshall#fourthSection

We also have student ambassadors on the Ambassador Platform, and we have Abbie who is currently studying a masters in nursing after doing a paramedic sciences undergraduate degree with us at SHU. I know the course isn't the same but it might give you a little bit more insight into how health courses work here and a bit more about placements: https://www.shu.ac.uk/study-here/student-chat

In terms of accommodation, Sheffield is a really affordable city and our accommodation prices start at £91 per week which has an en-suite and only one accommodation is a shared bathroom. All first years are guaranteed a room in one of our halls too! Here is the link to all of our accommodation choices:https://www.shu.ac.uk/study-here/accommodation/properties

In general, I really like it here. You get access to three teams of support - an academic advisor team, a student support team and an employability team which are all great and really helpful.

The city is also really nice too and is quite affordable and there are lots of students here! There are loads of nice cafes and restaurants, Meadowhall is only 5 minutes away on the train and nights out are good here too!

We also have three open days coming up in the new year in February, March and April so if you are interested in coming to Hallam, you can sign up here: https://www.shu.ac.uk/visit-us/undergraduate-applicant-open-days and you will be able to get a lot more specific information and get a feel for the uni and city!

I hope some of this helps and good luck choosing your Universities!

Hi there!

I'm a current third-year at York St. John. I study psychology, so unfortunately I don't know too much about the nursing degree! I see you've already picked YSJ, so I just wanted to make myself available in case you've got any general questions about the university!

Feel free to reach out, you can message us, reply here, or post on the YSJ page with any questions you have!
