Is the University of Chichester safe for LGBTQ students?

Hi! I'm an international student applying to musical theatre and drama courses in the UK. I wanted to ask queer students at Chichester what y'all's experiences are like with the school and the community there.
Especially as a trans person, I want to make sure I'd be coming to a place that's safe for me.

I’m also applying and visted a few months ago, from the looks of it the uni appears very accepting and also diverse

From my experience at the uni things were pretty safe for LGBTQ+ students - there was/is an LGBT society as well as an LGBT Officer for the SU; there were always LGBT meet-ups during freshers week and they'd have some LGBT themed events at the SU (e.g. Drag nights and Pride WSIHE). There's a pretty high number of LGBTQ+ students there and ik there are also some LGBTQ+ members of staff.

I think, like anywhere, there's just some people who aren't chill/don't quite understand things or it's a matter of the wider area. When I started (2021) I remember hearing some people talk about experiences of people causing problems when they were walking with their partner in town or ik when I was walking with someone after Pride one year we got yelled at by some businessmen. But, mentioning Pride, they've been running since 2021 and they have had really good turn-outs and a lot of the shops in the town centre will show support for the event when it's coming up. So I think there is a shift for the better going on.

Hi, I've recently graduated from the University of Chichester and during my three years at the university learnt that inclusivity and student wellbeing are both excellent at Chi. The campus always felt safe and friendly and the staff are incredibly helpful and go above and beyond to ensure students feel safe and comfortable. I hope this helps 🙂

Hey, I graduated in 2023 from Chichester.
Chichester is one of the unis which is best for LGBT students. I'm trans and I was the first transgender student to be allowed to play on a single sex team and even competed in BUCS before I had to retire for medical reasons, we haven't heard a single case of this happening anywhere else in the UK (if anyone does know of any other trans athletes please do correct me!). I didn't run into a single issue with students at the uni and only one comment from another uni's visiting team in the two years I played/supported the team competitively. I think the SU also won an award for it!
The wider community can be a bit hit and miss in places but I never had a serious issue, it was usually stares/vague comments from older people but the actual uni itself was really keen to make sure everyone felt they could be themselves.

From speaking to other students, this university is very welcoming and accepting.
