A lot of places don’t let you volunteer until at least 16 some even older. My biggest tip is after COVID their are lots of online work experience that is helpful and more easily accessible especially for someone your age. Don’t limit it to just medical work experience, I got 3/4 offers for medicine and 4/4 interviews and I did an online course that covered all healthcare careers and used that to show I knew what went into medicine and that doctors don’t work alone and that I had considered other careers, I also volunteered at a hospital as a dining companion helping people eat after they had had a stroke, they really liked this at my interview because I had hands on experience with patients whilst many people had only watched other people do things. I showed more skills this way such as communication and empathy which you won’t get just watching a GP for example, it also showed more commitment than just one day following someone around. Unless you have family in the field it is hard to get full medical work experience as they don’t want children wandering around hospitals. Once you get the experience you need to think about what you have learnt from it as its no good just saying you’ve done it, lots of people I were applying with had great experience with surgeons or doctors in hospitals and they listed what they did on their personal statement bud didn’t get any interviews because they seemingly hadn’t learnt anything. If you don’t get the best work experience but showed you tried they value it much more than those who have done loads but not taken any of it in. It’s really clear to the admission people who has tried to get experience and who has great family connections or schools etc.
