Hi Anon,

You may have heard this a lot, but you're not the only one out there who feels they'd like to make more friends and I'm sure many students will be feeling the same 🙂

Please try not to worry - you have only been at uni a few months and settling into a brand new environment takes time. Have you tried finding a society you like the look of? Or asking anyone you are with after a lecture if they want to grab coffee? Does the SU hold any events like cocktail nights or quizzes that you might be interested in? How about your coursemates - if your course involves any groupwork this can also be a good way to get to know people more.

You will get plenty of opportunities to meet new people as you go on in your studies, its normal for things to take time.

I hope this helps!

Hi there,

It can be hard trying to make friends at Uni and I understand how you are feeling, so thought I could add some of my tips for making friends at Uni:

1.

Firstly, I would say that you could have a look on social media and see if you can meet anybody this way. Quite often there will be groups on here for people who are on your course, or just at your uni in general and sometimes you can get chatting to people on here and make plans with them!

1.

Like Holly said, joining a society is a great way to make friends. There will be so many people here and you will likely have things in common with them as you have the same interest (the society) so you might get along with people here too. The socials are fun too and it also just gets you out of your house doing something fun that you enjoy doing!

1.

If you are living in halls, try and spend time in the social areas or organise things to do with your flatmates. This could be a night out or staying in - a games night, movie night etc. Or, you may meet others around the building in other social spaces which might be worth trying!

1.

Make sure you are attending your classes at uni as you will meet people this way too. Try and ask if anyone wants to go out after uni, to the library together or just for a coffee as you might be surprised at how many people would want to do this and might just be too shy to ask!

1.

If your student union puts events on too this is a great place to look for people to chat to. They quite often will put things on that all students can attend which are fun and you also get to meet a wide variety of people by doing this too!

I hope some of this helps,

Hi there,

It’s great that you’re making the most of UCL’s library to study! To meet people and make friends, you could start by engaging with others in shared study spaces or joining study groups. Many students appreciate casual chats during breaks or over coffee, so don’t be shy to start conversations. If you're looking for more social opportunities, the Students' Union (SU) at your own university organizes events, meetups, and clubs where you can connect with fellow students who share similar interests. You could also consider joining UCL-related clubs or networking events to meet like-minded individuals. Stay open and proactive!
I hope you make new friends soon.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi there,

It can be hard to start interacting with people in your first year and make the first move to try and make friends, but honestly everyone will be in the same boat!

You'll likely meet new people on your course, simply by sitting near new people in your lectures or taking part in group work with them. Not everyone will be your type of people, but starting to chat to them will help you figure out common interests, and who you might be good friends with!

I know it's a cliché, but societies and sports groups are such a good way to make friends due to you being surrounded by like minded people and you are likely to hit it off with other people due to your common interest. Why not take a look and see if there are any you'd be interested in?

You'll probably find that a lot of other students at your uni study in the same library as you, so starting to notice the same people and engaging with familiar faces would be a great way to put yourself out there!

I hope that helps, and best of luck!

Hi there,

I used to do some observations in the classroom during lectures. When I saw someone active and very interested in the subject, I would ask them if they wanted to go do some studying together in a library. That way I have built a small community, we have made our own discord server and it's been only growing ever since.

Speaking to people directly at library might feel a bit awkward, so I would advise to start making some connections within your cohort

Take care,
Ilya

P.S. Student societies exist for the exact purpose of meeting new people with same interests.

Hi,

I think it could be a good idea to just be friendly with them and ask them what course they are studying and maybe if they are interested in studying together.

As well you could see if your students Union offers any particular societies/clubs that you might be interested in joining. This can be a really great way of making friends as everyone will have similar interests.

I hope this helps,
