University or my dreams

Is anyone else conflicted about which career path they should take?

For me it’s either going to uni doing media law because it’s a stable pathway

OR

Going down the route of being in the creative industries being and actor but it’s a lot more risky

I really don’t know

You could do a Law degree, act / get involved in theatre at University (always lots of opportunities with Uni societies etc), and then make a decision about which way to go. Or you could do something like this - Acting Summer Foundation Course: 10 Weeks - Bristol Old Vic Theatre School - and work out if its worth applying to Drama School, and ignoring Law.

There’s routes into both acting and law that don’t require an undergraduate degree. Choosing one or the other for the next 3/4 years doesn’t prevent you from changing your mind.

It might be better to do a bit of research into all the alternative pathways so you know your options if you change your mind and then focus on what will make you happiest for the medium term of the next few years.

Hi

I think that it is great that you have an idea that you know what you want to do after your education already. I would advise that you try to get some work experience in both areas to experience what it would be like.

I hope this helps,

Hi @selena3217,

I completely understand your dilemma as I'm in a similar boat of either going into a stable job in management or being an entrepreneur. I think the best route is to implement both into your life! As said by others, there is a route into acting or law without a degree.

You could do a law degree and get into acting through university societies, extra curricular acting classes or various external routes into acting. This way you can provide yourself with a safety net, in case acting doesn't work out.

Alternatively you could do an acting degree, having such a passion will often allow you to thrive throughout your studies. You could really dedicate this time to building a strong network and putting yourself in the best position possible from an employability perspective.

It's important to remember there are other routes into law too, I recommend doing an online work experience programme with a law firm to learn a bit more. Personally I did one of these and thought it was an excellent way to learn more about the routes into law.

The final thing is remember, whatever you choose isn't what your stuck with. You could change your degree or come back and study something else. Even if you finish your degree and realise its not the right path for you, there are so many other opportunities and you will have develop great transferable skills.

Good luck with your decision, please feel free to ask me any questions
