Exeter Uni

Im in Year 12 and researching about at unis. Exeter University is really good for my course and would probably be on of the better choices for me.
But i’ve heard a lot about Exeter and the people that go there. I’m mixed race and from a lower income and state school. Is it really just private school kids there and can you feel like a difference between the different wealth groups etc
Even tho the university is great I would like to feel comfortable and for there to be at least some sort of diversity since i come from London so I’m also used to it

I'd say the University gets significantly more diverse every year. In terms of the feeling of wealth divide; it is something that you would definitely observe at some point, though, depending on what societies you join, you'd notice it more/less i.e. joining the shooting, hockey or skiing society. But there's also a wide variety of clubs to join to feel more at home. Honestly, Exeter is such a good Uni with the balance it has between academic reputation and campus life.

ps.. nothing can prepare you for the amount of signet rings, Canterbury trackpants, Schöffel's and Tom's trunk you'd come across ahaha

Hi, i have this same concern for Exeter, i still applied because if we want the divide to be reduced then more people who are part of that divide need to apply (if you know what i mean) but yeah i honestly get your concerns but i think any Russell group university you will come across snobs and rich kids who have had no sense of broader tough experiences, but you will also definitely find your people, because like me there will be people applying who are average, middle class, no private education etc going to the uni and you will click with them. Thats how I’m thinking about it tbh

Hi there!

I'm glad to hear that you are considering applying to Exeter.

Please don't be deterred by stereotypes! I am of the same demographic as you (but from just outside of Liverpool), and I promise there are many more students who are mixed-race, state-educated, and of a lower income background. There are many societies where you can meet a diverse range of people, such as the 93% Club, for instance. We also have a lot of international students from over 150 countries, which make up 25% of the student population here.

University is where you will meet people from all walks of life, so whilst there will be people of a different background, it is also easy to surround yourself with people not too dissimilar as you.

Ultimately, you will make lifelong friends here, no matter what. The students are really welcoming and there are plenty of opportunities, within societies or within your timetable, to meet others and get to know them more.

Your race/colour of your skin is a major factor for day in day out at Exeter. I am a fair skin asian yet at Exeter Law I had been bullied by teachers both male and female, as well as harrassed racially and sexual harrassments. Be prepared to be bullied deeply by students and staff both home grown or imported from abroad, since it's the vibe of the area/village where your skin colour is key factor. Be prepared to endure all bullying of being shouted at and dismissed and vilifying while spending thousands of pounds and sacrificing years of your lives that got you prepared for uni since Exeter uni won't do anything but to throw individual student under the bus to protect their own who are upholder of white supremacy, since end of the day: birds of the same feather flock together. Unless you can hire senior graduate students to tutor you away from Exeter, you will hardly pass, since teachers are 99% of the time help those who look like them with favourable marks and assignment guidelines only to project them as role models & all beacuse these students are causasians. Their collective harm to break black and Muslim students with all that trauma will likely take years to recover from! So be prepared for what you are signign up for and may God help you!
