Advice on Courses to Enhance Career Progression After Qualifying as a Nurse

Hi all,

I’m about to qualify as a nurse and am really keen on progressing in my career. I’m aware that staying at Band 5 can limit pay and opportunities, so I’m looking for advice on which courses or qualifications I should consider to enhance my progression.

I’ve heard of courses like prescribing or physical assessment training, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has completed these or other courses that have helped with career advancement. What qualifications or specialisms should I pursue to move up the bands and increase my earning potential? Any suggestions on good courses or resources would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

once you qualify as a band 5 nurse then you could always apply for a band 6 nurse position after few years ( you'll have to check the qualifications period that you have to do before you can apply for a band 6 position - some health boards will allow you to do this after one year qualify whereas others it might be at least 3 years) and then after another few years apply for band 7 until eventually you reach top of the nursing ladder.

You'll not be paid any more money for doing the courses you have mentioned.

Bottom of band 5 starts around £30,000 depending on what part of the UK you work in as a nurse.

This is for England.

Band 5 pay Minimum years of experience
1-2 £29,969
2-3 £32,324
3-4 £32,324
4-5 £36,483

The courses you take really depend on what direction you want your career to go in.

I would take some time on qualifying to find where you think you’ll be heading career wise, you’ll likely know what courses you need to do to progress then.
