Chance at Oxford University???

My GCSE grades are 9 (RS) 8 (Math) 87 (Further Maths) 7 (Physics) 777776 (English Language) 6 (Computer Science) 4, I REALLY want to go to Oxbridge, not just because of its reputation. Im doing lots of Super Curriculars and im predicted all As rn but im aiming for 5A*s in Math, F math, Pol, ECon and EPQ. Do you think ill get in? - maybe PPE or Philosphy or math

Im not an expert, but to put it truthfully, its gonna be pretty hard with those GCSEs. However, if you really want Oxford, you have a chance if your whole application is good, personal statement, admissions test, predicted grades etc. I'd say there is no harm in applying, you will gain from the experience whether you get in or not, but also don't be too fixated. You could have just as good a life if you don't go to Oxford for university.

Oxford do care about GCSEs and courses like PPE and Maths are super competitive (I know someone who was predicted 4A* and got all 9s for GCSE but still got rejected pre-interview for Oxford Maths). Philosophy is less competitive I think so maybe you'd have a better chance at that? Or maybe Cambridge Philosophy since they care less about GCSEs.

Anyway like others have said, u can't base ur chances just off GCSEs. Just focus on getting good A levels and doing supercurriculars. Also do u really need 5 subjects? Just do the 4 A levels or 3 + the EPQ, theres really no point doing more and ur more likely to get better grades doing less.

hard to say, honestly there's a heavy weighting on the admission test. I had 999999888, A*A*AA and still got rejected (assuming it was the test for me as I felt it went quite badly). They even emailed after I applied just to say that they will be mostly looked at the admission test scores over other stuff. I would say don't worry too much about the grades as everyone has those (obviously meet the a level requirements lol), focus on the admission test and interview prep and just go for it - you'll never know unless you try.

Just thought I'd add that ultimately yes it's competitive as everyone else has mentioned, but you lose nothing by trying.
omds same I had 999999987A* and A*A*A*A (achieved grades) and got rejected pre-interview😭But as regards the OP, there is no harm in trying just try and get a good score in the admissions test as that seems to be almost exclusively what decides the people who get interviewed, then try do well in the interview if you get it and see!! pretty sure they interview the top ≈35% of admissions test-takers, i’ve heard a lot of experts say that. also know that they also contextualise gcses!!

IK that if i dont go to Oxford its fine its just that ive been and i know ppl who have went and i feel it would be the best uni for me. Do you think if i exaggerate cirumstances (as long as im not over exagerrating or lying) like m dog passing away i could have a better chance

they say that i dont need 5 but the work load other than epq is actually ok and ive seen alot of ppl achieve the things i want to do and all had 5 A*s also compared to Oxford im not a big fan of cambridge and i was thinking to just do a philosophy course at oxford but they only do it with theology which is okay but i feel like after a taster session i had its more theology based and PPE is quite a safe choice and i love all 3 subjects, but i want to know what my chances really are because ive been rejected so many times after overachieving and i dont want to be disappointed (IK Oxfrd isnt the only way but i just feel like id really like to go there compared to the other 4 unis ive been to)

Thank you! do you think if i ace my admissions test and A-levels itll make up for it?

Thank you! i hope they contexualise well cause i pretty sure the average grade is anywhere between 4-6 and at A-level b-c and im definitely going to prep for the test once im set on a course

There is no single honours philosophy degree at Oxford, it's only studied as a joint school with other courses (philosophy & theology, PPE, philosophy and modern languages, PPL, maths and philosophy, physics and philosophy, CS and philosophy or classics as in the that course you can do as much philosophy as in any of the others). Philosophy and theology at Oxford is not a "single honours" philosophy course, the theology/religion component is wholly separate. Philosophy is offered as a single honours course at Cambridge, where it's very competitive. It also has a much more analytic focus than Oxford I believe.

GCSEs are not heavily weighted for maths and similar subjects like physics at Oxford. Generally they are considered more for many other courses including PPE however. Cambridge views things holistically.

You should choose your degree based on what you are interested in and what you want to study, not what you think is easiest to get into.

If you don't actually care what subject you're applying to and picking one based on what your odds of getting in that clearly you're only interested because of the reputation...

I AM NOT picking a subject thats easy to get into im passionate abt all of these subjects ive already said im not very interested in cambridge and IK about how Oxford does their philsophy course im simpley asking what are my chances at getting in thats it im leaning more to PPE, phil and maths because its what i find more interesting.

if i was their for the rep i would've done better in my GCSEs and i wouldn't be asking for advice on forum i've. been to oxford i have friends who go there and i think it would be good for me, simple as.

I DO NOT CARE ABOUT REPUTATION and i seriously HATE it when ppl say that, like i've said if your not going to read the thread properly and give advice why post, i've. said this at least 3 times in this thread and i find it rude and offensive you've mad that assumption. if i was their for the rep i would've done better in my GCSEs and i wouldn't be asking for advice on forum i've. been to oxford i have friends who go there and i think it would be good for me, simple as.

Except you say you don't care about reputation, but also you don't seem care about the course you're applying to and you're only interested in those universities. The two don't line up.

It's understandable to choose one of these unis because e.g. you love chemistry and you feel Oxford is the best place to do that, or you want to study e.g. Insular Latin and Old Norse and Cambridge is the only place you can do that. But just choosing a bunch of courses (some unrelated to the others) and saying you want to study maybe one of those but just at Oxbridge? There's really no way to square that with not caring about reputation which I can see.

So once again, you should pick the course you like the most and apply to that one if you actually don't care about reputation...whether or not it's more or less competitive than other courses you're less interested in.

i think more and more recently oxbridge (especially oxford) have been looking for students with top grades coming from state schools - not necessarily privates. 4 of my friends have been turned away because of this, 2 of them are even international fee payers. Dont feel you dont have a chance if you go to a private school currently, your GCSEs and A levels are really good (well done!!!) just bear that in mind that Oxford is going all out for state schools this year. Good luck though! You have a good chance.

This is slightly unrelated, but what super curriculars are you doing for PPE? I'm in year 12 and I'm not sure of what activities I should be doing - both to help my personal statement and to increase my basic knowledge of PPE.

i was told that oxford cares a lot for gcses, but other universities don’t. you would have a chance with LSE, Cambridge, Warwick etc with all A*s
