You’ll need to look at some specific universities and the assessment style for the compulsory modules, as well as the assessment style for any optional ones you’re interested in. Many universities still opt for an exam based approach when it comes to qualifying law degrees, likely due to the fact that for the majority of students (who tend to be aspiring barristers and solicitors), they’ll need to get used to sitting lengthy and intense exams in the future. For aspiring barristers it will be the bar exam and for aspiring solicitors it will be the SQE. If you’re someone who can’t manage exams at all, you may want to rethink going down the barrister route.

As well as this, different universities will do things differently depending on their history and reputation in the legal sphere and in the world. Top universities in London like LSE and UCL are academically rigorous in all subjects, but particularly when it comes to law. They tend to have higher entry standards in order to attract the brightest prospective students, which is something that will influence your research in terms of which universities you choose to target. Your educational history is an important factor in the admissions process, so this (broad) question is quite hard to answer simply. Perhaps look at the course pages for a few random universities under the University of London (e.g. SOAS, UCL, Royal Holloway, Westminster, KCL).

Hello @Labid,

As previously mentioned, the assessment methods vary between each subject and University. However, when it comes to Law, the most common assessment type is exam-based which is simply because of the nature of law. Since the Coronavirus pandemic, there has been some more creativity when it comes to assessment but the general idea of closed-book exams is that it tests your critical thinking skills and your knowledge of the law without books.

As a law student having to do a couple of closed-book exams this academic year, I originally thought there are better assessment methods which help students better retain knowledge and manage their mental health compared to exams. However, for law I have discovered that closed-book exams have their place. If you want to be a Solicitor or a Barrister, after your law degree you have to do professional training courses which assess you using closed-book exams which have a reputation of being quite difficult. Furthermore, if you are advising clients, they don't want someone who doesn't know the law and has to consult textbooks for what is foundational legal knowledge. I learnt this the hard way in a recent case I took on as Student Advisor in the Legal Advice Clinic here at Leicester Law School.

Although exams definitely have their place, at Leicester Law School we have a variety of assessment methods. Some ways which you can expect to be assessed include both essay questions and problem questions as coursework, reflective essays, client letter writing, video assessments, group presentations, group work, multiple choice question exams, online exams and close-book exams to name just a few.

If you have any further questions regarding Law Assessments, Law or anything else at all please do let me know.
