should i transfer universities for second year?

I'm a first year studying economics and finance at university of surrey and honesty my experience with first semester has been.. kinda disappointing. if im being honest commuting to uni and not being able to make any friends yet is definitely a factor T-T but idk i find the campus kinda depressing sometimes and even now im rlly struggling to find housemates for second year cos idrk anyone and no one seems to be replying when i do ask about house groups lol. but anyways ive been considering transferring to RHUL for second year cos i always thought the campus was so pretty and apparently a lot of second years still stay on campus so im wondering if it might be easier for me to get accomodation there for the next yr anyways. i saw that they dont offer econ and finance so i was open to just doing econ or econ and data science instead since im not too picky. anyways what do you guys think i should do idk if im being kinda pessimistic bc i havent had luck making friends and i should just wait for it to get better or if i should move to the prettier campus next year :smile:

I’m in a somewhat similar situation to you but instead I moved away from home thinking I’d be better at making new friends there than if I went to a Uni at home but sadly that hasn’t worked out for me and I have one friend who barely shows up, flatmates I’m not keen on and just loads of acquaintances which sounds like what you have in all honesty. I’m thinking of transferring to RHUL myself as like you said the campus is pretty and I like the course so if I was you I’d consider transferring. People always say ‘try the societies’ and I don’t know about Surrey’s but Leicester’s societies are awful and if you’re really unhappy then you shouldn’t wait for it to magically get better and start taking steps to transfer if it’s gonna make you happy and you don’t mind switching your econ course.

I would be very careful about changing unis just for the sake of a campus being "prettier". Unis do not often allow transfers and you will probably have to restart a new course if you decided to change unis. You are effectively making a decision to add circa 10k pounds to your student finance, and lose your extra year of funding, so you need to make sure you are doing it for the right reasons. I would definitely keep digging around getting a house share as not commuting and having more time to get to know your fellow students will make a huge difference to your experience, and changing unis is not a guarantee you will get either.

yeah thats defo true but the first yr econ the modules are veryy similar so if i get the grades transferring for second year should be fine as long as its a similar course i think, it just depends if they have space? if they need me to restart i definitely wont do it but if its something thats possible i'll still look into it. and ye ur right transferring definitely isnt gonna guarantee a better experience which is why im still not sure if i should go through with it ^^;

Hi

I think that it would be good for someone in your situation to think about what you really like about your university and what is good about it. In addition to this, I would then consider what you think isn't going well here and if there is anything that you can do to change this situation.

I would speak to your personal tutor to see if there is anything else that they can do to help you.

I hope this helps,

Matt

have you asked Surrey if they have any vacancies for the rest of the year?
At lots of universities students who are dropping out are desperate to find replacement tenants
