Second degree funding

I just got off the phone to SLC and I'm just confused now.
I have a BA in History and a PgDip in Psychology, both of which were funded by student finance. I am interested in retraining in Biomedical Science. So far, i have read and been told that I would be eligible for second degree funding, since it is a STEM subject, and as long as I study it part-time. My lecturers and other staff at college have told me the same.

I called SLC with a different question and asked about this too. I was cut off and told that even if it is part-time, I wouldn't be eligible for any funding for BSc Biomedical Science. I was then told goodbye and hung up on despite trying to clarify again what the website says.

So my question is: am I eligible for a maintenance loan and tuition loan, or one of those, or neither?

Thank you.

Hi Werka_Zal,

I am sorry to hear of your experience.

I can confirm that a Biomedical Science course is an exception to previous study and equal level qualification rules if you study part time.

Can you confirm the course name and university please?

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

Thank you for your reply, that's a big relief!

I do not have a specific university yet as i am only just finishing my application. It would be BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science, and I'm only looking at accredited courses. I am applying to York St John, Leeds, Leeds Trinity, Sheffield, and Northumbria.

So I would be eligible for both tuition and maintenance loans, am I understanding correctly? Sorry to ask again, but I just want to make 100% certain before I send off my applications!

Thanks, Weronika

Hi Werka_Zal,

Will you be attending the part time course in person? Can you also confirm your nationality and residency status? Can you confirm your age as well please?

Thanks, Clare

Hi,

I will be attending the part-time course in person. My nationality is Polish, but I have settled status, and I will be turning 28 in January.

Thanks, Weronika

Hi Weronika,

Thank you. In that case, based on what you have advised here, you should be eligible as long as it is a Biomedical Science course at a university that is funded by SFE. This will be confirmed by the university.

Thanks, Clare
