Unsure about my university course

Hello, for the past few weeks ive been seriously doubting what i should do for university, i really like history but i’m not exactly sure about what i wanna do with it in the future. I’ve also been looking into law recently and i’m finding it quite interesting. However, it’s only a month left until the ucas deadline and that means i’d have to write my personal statement. Should i change my course or would it be better to send off my ucas for history?

Hi neonpinkmoonz,

Reflecting on your course choices and interests are very normal to think about, especially since you are to join university! Personally, if you are unsure about what you want to do in the future, like I was when I first attended university, I think it would be best to go for a course that opens more career doors then limits them - I am not saying History would do such a thing but it is an important thing to note. However, if you are leaning more toward law, you could pivot now and focus your personal statement on transferable skills (like research and critical thinking) from your history studies, showing your growing passion for law.

Once again, the decision is entirely up to you! You could apply for history and if you did still want to study law, transferring courses is always an option. I did this for when I started university. I chose to study Accounting and Finance but later realised I preferred Law and so went through the transfer period which may seem daunting but the university was a great help! Either way, choose the path that feels most aligned with your current interests, knowing flexibility exists later. You got this!

Have a look at Liberal Arts and other courses that allow you to combine several different subjects - examples:
BA Liberal Arts | University of Southampton
Combined Honours | School X | Newcastle University
About | Flexible Combined Honours | University of Exeter

OR - step back, plan a gap year, and do some calm thinking about what you want to study at Uni, and why.
Nowhere does it say you can only go to Uni straight from school, and time out to think thisthroughis never a waste of time.

Hey there,

I thought I’d add my input too recommending that you have a look into a combined course!

I’m currently in my third year studying Sociology. Originally I did decide on studying this with Criminology as combined subjects- however, Criminology wasn’t for me at all and I dropped this around 6 months into my first year. In terms of my personal statement I included elements of both subjects highlighting my interests, previous study and possible career choices.

I’ve included a link below to the course page for History and Law as a combined choice at Liverpool Hope:

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Good luck with your search and completing your UCAS application!
