Dropping out of year 13?

I have been suffering from glandular fever for 2 months now and am still feeling completely exhausted. I am in year 13 hoping to go to uni in september and have already dropped 1 a level due to the illness (now i do art, economics and music tech AS level)

i have only been into school for 1 or 2 mornings a week over the past 6 weeks and have missed a lot. in that time i was also suffering from tonsillitis, flu, a cold and a chest infection but have fully recovered from all of those now.

My big issue now is my extreme tiredness, brain fog and dizziness. I don’t know what to do as i feel as if i have zero energy all the time and am struggling to do daily tasks. My concern is that this could develop into cfs/me as i know of a few people that have developed this after glandular fever, which would then leave me feeling like this for a very long time. However i do know that the tiredness lasts for a while for a lot of people recovering from glandular fever even when they don’t feel ‘ill’ anymore so im not massively stressed about this yet.

My issue is that i need to make a decision by january as to whether i continue to go to school and do my a levels or not. I have no idea how long i’ll take to feel normal again as everyone w glandular fever reacts sooo differently so idk what to do?!

I don’t want to make the decision to drop out and then find that im feeling completely normal by february or equally stay in school and not get any better and miss the whole of the spring and summer term anyway.

Repeating a year is not an option for me but i am confident that i would be okay even if i did drop out as there are many access to HE courses i would be interested and able to do. ( many of which are online which would be helpful for me as i deal with my tiredness)

i understand im going to have to wait and see how i feel when it gets to january but if i feel the same as i do now i have no idea what i would do- any advice?

Hi! I'd first maybe consult your GP and ask for their advice, as well as the college/sixth form you attend. It is possible that you could get provided with medical accomodations as well as a reduced workload. Hope this helps, and I hope all works out well for you

thank you! yes i’ll definitely be talking to my gp soon, when i’ve spoken to them before they have said the only thing i can do to get better is rest and drink water which i have been doing, but the symptoms can last from 3 weeks to over a year and there’s no way of telling how long it will affect each person annoyingly :frown:

My college is updated and supportive of the fact that im not in school at the moment and all my teachers are being helpful but i’ve already dropped an a level and there’s nothing else i can drop or do to reduce my workload unfortunately. If i were to drop another subject i would then have to repeat a year to gain another qualification anyways so not much else i can do.

I think all i can do now is hope i feel better when i have to make my decision
