Maintenance and tuition fee loan eligibility?

Hi Drew,

Can I ask a similar question…I also want to do a second degree, also in AH (Physiotherapy). The info online is pretty vague about whether I would be eligible for both tuition and maintenance fee loans. The worry is that if I’m not eligible to receive both I wouldn’t be able to apply for the NHS LSF or the parental support.

I will try a call The SLC this week…but in the meantime, can you tell me if I would be eligible for the maintenance as a general rule (just a reduced rate?) or if you’re unable to clarify, explain what are they assessing?…would I have to be on a very low household income to get maintenance too?

Many thanks for your help!

Hi there, what is the name of the university and course you're looking to study? Thanks, Jason

Hi Anna,

Physiotherapy at the university is an exception course as long as you're not registered in that field already. So this would attract the full funding. Thanks, Jason

Many thanks Jason, but where does it say that I would be eligible to apply for both tuition and maintenance loan? As that is showing a list of exception courses. Thanks again

Hi Drew,

To clarify this I am currently on the phone to Student Finance..who don’t seem to know anything about the healthcare exception courses and second degrees thing. Very frustrating. I mentioned the HEP website that Jason shared with me and the guys is saying I have to look at the student finance website for info, despite there being no I for on there about this.

The guy is now arguing with me and putting me on hold. He is reading something out from a Gov website that says I wouldn’t get funding because I already have an equivalent level course that’s been funded.

I just wanted Student Finance to confirm, why is it so hard.

It has been confirmed by the SFE reps on TSR so don't worry about getting confirmation by phone again (call handlers can have less experience). I follow a lot of healthcare threads and AHP courses are exceptions so you will be eligible to apply for both loans. You will also be able to apply to the NHS LSF for the annual training grant and other support (once your SFE loan has been confirmed).

Hi there,

I have checked the course details you have provided and this course is an exception course. We will not take your previous study or qualifications into consideration when we assess you for this course.

Thanks, Drew
