Picking A Level subjects.

Hi, I’m in year 11 and starting to put in applications for sixth forms, but I’m struggling to pick 3 subjects.

I like the sound of business A Level and I enjoy it at GSCE, but is it really beneficial in the long run?

I also like the sound of English Literature and I am also very good at English literature (Predicted a 9) so I think I want to pick that. However, a lot of people say it’s a LOT of reading, and I don’t know if it’s true or not. It would help if someone could clear that up.

I’m open to my third pick, I like the sound of history and politics. But I want to know a strong 3 pick that will keep me open to anything in the future

Thanks
What do you want to do after you leave sixth form?
Choosing English lit, history or politics and business would be a good combination as long as youre not aiming for anything in STEM, economics/finance etc because you’d be sticking to essay subjects rather than ones which would keep those routes open.
If you’re enjoying those subjects now and are doing well at them then i think they’d be great choices!

I’m not sure what I wanna do after Sixth form, ideally I want to do a Degree apprenticeship but I know how competitive they are etc and wouldn’t turn down University as an option.

I don’t really like maths/sciences and I often struggle with them, I feel like my most strong subjects at GSCE are English and history.

I’m just unsure which subjects to pick, do you think English Lit, History & Business is strong or what would you recommend?

I also want to know about business A level because I hear it’s not as respected as economics etc

I think its a great combination if you enjoy the subjects and think you can excel in them 🙂 im not sure on the content of business as i dont take it- might be worth starting a thread to ask questions you’d like answering about the subject.

Hey @Farhaan77,

If you're predicted a 9 in GCSE English Literature, the A-Level content shouldn't be a problem. I achieved an A* at GCSE and went on to study A-Level English Lit, and there really isn't as much reading to it as you'd initially expect. Similarly to GCSE, you'll have a couple of core texts spread across different papers/modules, but the overall workload is very manageable.

Hope this was helpful and best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
