Hi,
I hope you are well!😊

Well done for getting started on your UCAS application!😊 Its great that you are looking to study here at Kent!

Applying to university is such an exciting time! But can also be a bit nerve-racking, but taking the time as you are to hear from universities and other students is a great way to help you make up your mind! Talk to parents/carers, siblings or teachers too! This is something I found helpful when going through the pros and cons of each of my choices 😊

Some things I found helpful when deciding which university to attend included considering:

Finances, living/travelling costs

Graduate prospects

Placements/ a year abroad

Student support

Social life, societies etc

The feel of the campus! Make use of those open days where you can.

Library resources

Facilities

Assessment and style of teaching

I'm currently in my third year, and have loved my time at Kent, so let me know if you would like any info about extracurriculars, part-time work etc that I've got involved with during my time here😊

I'm sure you have already looked at the School of Computing, and all that it has to offer, but let me know if you have any questions🙂

Just a few things about Computer Science at Kent:

Computer Science at Kent was ranked 24th for research quality in The Complete University Guide 2023.

The university has researchers in areas of machine learning, robotics, and cyber security.

Courses are accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.

The School of Computing has a ‘homework club’ which is great place to go if you are looking for help with your studies. There are several sessions a week which are ran by students who are further on in their degrees.

The university has a hack space, with technicians on hand to provide support to students.

Graduates have gone on to work in companies such as Samsung, and Mercedes Formula One, and have pursued careers as data scientists and more!

Find out more about The School of Computing here, including the 'homework club', graduate prospects, and the facilities, such as a laser cutter, and 3D printers, available to students.

Lastly, unrelated to Computer Science, but I've also got an arthritis diagnosis, and have had a really good experience with Student Support and Wellbeing during my studies. Luckily I have not needed them too much, but they have been helpful with setting up an Inclusive Learning Plan (ILP) for me during my studies, and exam adjustments too🙂

We'd love to see you at one of our upcoming open days, if you haven't visited Canterbury Campus yet. The next open day is the 18th of January 2025!

Let us know if you have any questions, we will be happy to respond! 😊
Best of luck with your studies and all of your applications!😊

Hi,
Yes it is! I don't often find others with a diagnosis like mine- maybe its not as uncommon as I thought🙂 I hope you are well following your diagnosis😊

My ILP has been great during my studies, especially with my exams. I wasn't aware of it either at the start, but the team were really helpful in reaching out to me and setting it all up😊

If you have any other questions about ILP's, the opportunities available, or studying at Kent, do let me know😊

Best wishes,
Josie

Hi @astr0star123 !
It's great to see your looking at Brighton!

I'm a final year Comp Sci student at Brighton and I think here is a great choice for you!

Our grade requirements for CBSE's are overall average of 60-65% to include a minimum of 5 subjects at 40% or higher at the 12th which you predicted grade is absolutely smashing!

The uni has loads of Computer Science courses we have Computer Science, Comp Sci with AI, Comp Sci with Cyber Security and Software engineering. We also have 2 games courses called Comp Sci with games , Digital Games Development. The first year for all the Comp Sci courses are the same so you can switch between them if you decide you want to specialise differently. The same applies to the 2 games courses but you can't switch between comp sci and games courses.

We primarily teach in Java (apart from our games courses which teach C++), however the way coding is taught here is from scratch. The lectures are teaching you how to code in general not how to code in java, meaning that you gain the skills and knowledge to learn to code in any language. We also do a bit of python in the intro to AI module and web development is coded in html, css and js. If your already doing computer science, first year can be quite easy as a lot of the stuff you will have a base knowledge of already.

We have 2 floors of labs for all of our computing degrees, most computers are dual boot Windows and Linux. We also have specific Linux boot pcs for our cyber security modules. All of these labs are available 9-5 to use, I like using the labs when doing coursework as they tend to be quieter and have less distractions than the library, most of the labs also have 2 screens which is deffo a bonus 😂

Our comp sci degrees are accredited by BCS The Chartered Institute for IT. We also offer Placement years, our placement team is amazing, I used them myself and they were so helpful. We have had students go on to work at Pepsi, Intel, Vodafone and many more.

I don't have arthritis but I do have a mobility limiting disability and Brightons disability and dyslexia have been amazing! I could request an Learning support plan and had it all sorted before I even moved into accommodation which gave me some major peace of mind. The LSP team really work with you to make sure you have as much help as possible

Our Student Union is great and also offers loads of support as well as our societies , both computer science and not comp sci related.

If you would like to look round our Mouslecoomb campus, we have an campus tour on the 22nd of January, or you can take a virtual tour !

I hope this helps you make your decision. If you have any questions, feel free to ask her or contact the enquiries team!
Have a great day!
