Wig

I'm not entirely sure whether to put this in "Health" or "Fashion and beauty". We'll go with F&B as it's more an aesthetic question, even though there's the health side to it.

Okay I'm sick of my hair. In recent years it's gone so thin, and believe it or not I haven't had a haircut (aside from my fringe) in over 7 years, yet it's gone from mid-back-length, to chin length, all on its own!
It won't bloody grow.

So I've had lots of suggestions from people - check my iron levels, magnesium, B12, thyroids, wear a silk bonnet, and so on and so forth. I'm going to bring it up with the GP as soon as I get chance.

But in the meantime I bought a wig - it arrived yesterday. Honestly does it look okay, or does it look very obviously fake? It's synthetic, not human hair.

I want it to look as similar to my pre-thinning hair as possible. Do you think I need to take it to be styled by a hairdresser?

Suggestions / opinions / advice on the wig would be appreciated.

For reference:

Pic 1 is from 2016, when my hair was fine (fine as in there was nothing wrong with it - not fine as in thin).

Pic 2 is from a couple of weeks ago. You can see how thin and short it is now

Pics 3 and 4 are from me trying on the wig yesterday.

I don't think the lighting in picture 4 is doing you any favours. It makes one side of your face look very pale, with other obscured by dark shadows. However, I don't think I would have guessed you were wearing a wig in picture 3 and 4 had you not said.

You say you "want it to look as similar to my pre-thinning hair as possible." Does that apply to the colour in addition to the style? Picture 1 makes your hair look essentially brown, with a hint of red, whilst picture 2 makes your hair colour seem much more red. Pictures 3 and 4 seem to have blended the style from picture 1 (albeit "fuller") with the colour from picture 2. If that's what you were going for, it worked.

If you will permit me, I’m a complete stranger to you, the sort of person whose reaction you’re interested in.

I would not have noticed you were wearing a wig at all. Not at all.

For what it’s worth, I can see the merit in going to a hairdresser for the confidence of having a professional hand look at it and make truly informed suggestions.

The colour doesn't matter as much as the style. I'm not a natural redhead, I've just been dying it mahogany for about 13 years. So the colour does fluctuate anyway (when it fades vs freshly dyed).

It's more the style that I'm hoping to get close to, so it's not obvious that it's a wig.

Thank you, that's helpful 😊
Okay what do y'all think of this one? I'm in two minds about whether it makes me look washed out or whether it's ok...
