UCL Mech Eng with Aero Personal Statement

Hey everyone! I'm an international student applying to different unis in the UK for aerospace engineering, and I know UCL doesn't offer that course, but it seems like a great uni regardless and I'm very interested in mechanical too (they're basically the same for the first few years anyway). I applied for the Beng in Mech Eng programme with the intention of then moving abroad for a masters in aero.

Issue is, I wrote my personal statement about my aspirations to study aerospace engineering and talked about my many exposures to engineering (a lot of it was aerospace but there were a few experiences in general engineering as well as mechanical with some aero). Now I'm wondering whether they will really care about me mentioning aerospace explicitly and whether or not that will have a negative effect on my application. Is there anyone who knows the answer/was in the same position as me at some point? Thank you!

I am in the exact same position as you are, people replied to me saying it will be fine as there were a lot of cases like this before, which they have no problem with their application. I have explicitly mentioned that I want to take an aero eng degree bla bla bla so i am worried as well, but yeah if ur predicted grade is high enough u should be fine, since unis know the limitation of ps and they are aware of the overlap in mech eng and aero eng. May I ask whats ur predicted? Mines A*A*A*A. Honestly i am so scared as well cuz i wanna be in London and my top choice is ICL, already gotten an offer from QMUL Uo Sheffield UoMAN but i dont really wanna go there

Thanks dude! That's really reassuring, and if it helps you I spoke with some guy that ended up getting in with an aero aimed ps. As for my predicteds I'm an international student studying in the French system lol so they're a bit different (we don't have letter grades, just our final exam marks and they're marked out of 20) but I was predicted a 20/20 in Maths, an 18/20 in Physics/Chemistry and an 18.5/20 average in all subjects (we have to take a bunch of mandatory subjects such as philosophy, history, etc.). I already got an offer from Bath and I got rejected from Cambridge due to a crappy esat so probably no Imperial bread coming either which makes UCL my top choice in the UK rn, hopefully I'll get in. Anyway, best of luck with ICL

Oh no don’t scare me with the Esat I’m doing it in a month😭 Good luck on getting in UCL tho and maybe Imperial will give u a chance, if I got rejected from imperial then hopefully I can at least secure UCL as my firm, might see u in UCL. Thank you for ur info:smile:

Oh don't worry about it lol you'll do fine as long as you prepare well enough for it, the main difficulty is time management really, the questions aren't necessarily that hard once you get used to the style. I personally feel like I could have done more prepping especially due to a bunch of content on the spec that I hadn't covered in school due to syllabus differences between the French/English system 😭. Anyways hope to see you at either Imperial or UCL next year! Keep me updated on what uni you end up going to

Ahh that’s what I’ve heard from other ppl as well so I’ve been prepping a lot literally grinding papers under timed condition, really just forcing myself to do questions as quick as possible. Hopefully I’m not gonna mess up my esat and yeah hope to see u in either one of them uni:smile:

Don't stress it too much man I'm sure you can still get into a good uni if you really want to do aero, passion and commitment are key! Also if you get into a uni for mech eng you can still easily go for a masters in aero somewhere else so that would also be a great option that usually doesn't require grades that are as high as the aero reqs

Nice reading your threads
My nephew also has aerospace themed personal statement and applied for mechanical engineering at UCL awaiting outcome
He got 11 grade 9 for gcse 1 grade 8 1 grade 7 fsmqmaths grade A gold medal for olympiads maths physics
Predicted 4 A * and A* for EPQ
He got an okay score esat at 4.65 got rejected after i Interview Cambridge Imperial, he’s not heard anything but most likely a rejection
Fingers crossed, he might get into UCO because that is his first choice now

My nephew is in the same position His PS is AERospace themed. Predicted 4A* + A* EPQ no response. 11 grade 9 for GCSE + A FSMQ maths. The stats for 2025 entry are out on the website 170 place 700 offers 3000 applicants

Hi My nephew is in the same position as you. His Personal statement is solely Aerospace and last minute changed one of his selections to Mechanical engineering. I phoned UCL admissions today, they said they do give preference to student who's Personal statements are Mechanical engineering based, but if their previous GCSE exams where of a extremely high standard i.e mostly 9 and predicted top end A level grades they tend to oversee the Aerospace part and can give an offer . Hope that is of some help
