Eligibility for studying in the UK as a British student with student loan

Hello
I was born in the UK, have a UK passport and a National Insurance number. I went to primary school in England from the age of 6 to 8. I have spent most of my life including all secondary education in Brazil as my Mother is Brazilian, my Father is British. I am 28 years old but haven't managed to get any useful work in Brazil so I now want to come to the UK and study for a degree so that I might have a career in the UK. I do not want to study as a Foreign Student because of the high cost.

I have had all my education certificates translated into English and I will be sending them to UK ENIC which is a UK based agency which will provide a comparison of my Brazilian qualifications to UK ones.

Can you please tell me what I need to do to be able to study as a UK student with a student loan.

Many thanks
David

Hi David, when are you looking to start your course and at what level of funding will this be? Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason
I would like to be able to start the course in 2026 but I'm concerned that I might have to be in the UK for longer before I start. I would like to apply for a UK Student loan to fund the tuition fees and also provide support for living expenses.
Thanks
David

Thanks for confirming. The advice I'm providing is based on current eligibility rules. If you don't plan on starting until the 26/27 academic year then I would always advise contacting us when those applications go live should any rules and regulations change. For UK nationals they need to meet the following to be eligible for the full funding.

Ordinarily resident in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for the 3 years immediately before the 1st day of the 1st academic year of their course for reasons other than full-time education (except UK nationals who are exercising their right to reside)

Ordinarily resident in England on the 1st day of the 1st academic year of their course.

Settled under the terms of Immigration Act 1971 (and not subject to any restrictions on the period for which they may stay).

Thanks, Jason

Thanks Jason
So does that mean that as a UK national with a UK passport, the question of having to prove being resident in the UK for 3 years before the start of the course is waived ? I took it to mean that because you wrote "except UK nationals who are exercising their right to reside" or have I misunderstood ? I wont have any documents to prove my residency.
Thanks
David

You would need to be living in the UK for the 3 years prior to the start of your course. I've enclosed further information here: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/who-qualifies. Thanks, Jason

Thanks Jason. I've checked the government site and I do understand the need for the 3 years but what would a student be required to provide to prove that ? I live with my dad and have no bills in my name. Would he have to provide the evidence?
Thanks
David

Hi there,

We don typically don't ask for evidence as we will ask for your home addresses for the last 3 years. If we were to ask evidence we may ask for your flight tickets or evidence of your bank statements and any sort of bills you pay in the UK.

Thanks, Drew
