If you find it really interesting then I'd honestly say to go for it. A lot of universities argue that their courses are very different to A-levels, and aren't too concerned about which ones you pick (with some exceptions ofc, such as maths and physics A-levels for engineering university). So even if you want to do something else in the future it isn't a bad idea to pick sociology. Plus you're a lot more likely to do well on an A-level you're interested in than one you're doing just for the sake of it lol.

I think the best thing to do is have a look at what degrees you want to pursue (that lead to jobs which meet your expectations/you're really interested to work at). See if they have required subjects you need to do and switch out your subjects accordingly. I reckon you could keep sociology and switch out another one of your subjects, though ultimately it's up to you.

Hope this helped

Its a solid essay-based subject and well-regarded by all Unis.

Very few A-Levels are ‘bad subjects’ - an essay based subject like sociology is probably a highly regarded subject in fact!

Hi there,

I think as long as it interests you, it's not a bad subject! There are so many things you can do with a sociology degree, so it's definitely not limited. There are also joint programs you can do, e.g., History and Sociology, which would open up more options for you.

A resource I find very useful is Prospects, so I've linked the page for sociology here. It's a really great resource for learning more about what you can get out of a degree, and would definitely be worth taking a look at.

I hope this helps,

@StraightAce

I did my under graduate degree in Sociology at Manchester Met and I had a great time 🙂 It is a fun subject to do, with social sciences I would come up with a bit of an action plan of what career you want to go into, and you might consider a fourth year doing something like teaching (a PGCE) or Social Work afterwards. Local Government like sociology degree's, and a lot of big blue chip companies have Graduate Management Programs which might interest you

Hi there :wavey:

I'm currently a second year Sociology with Social Policy student at the University of Sheffield. Sociology has lots of career options as it's focused on studying society. When I started my degree I didn't know what I wanted to do career wise, just that I liked being social and working with people. After various different volunteering roles and part time jobs I'm going to become a part-time teaching assistant alongside my studies. Other people in my course are going into fields such as the civil service, charity work, women's suffrage, conservation, policing, education policies, etc.

When choosing what degree to do the most important thing is to choose what you are interested in. The vast majority of people don't know what job they want when they start university, you have plenty of time to work that out through your studies. So if you a really interested in sociology then go for it, and it has a vast and diverse array of job aspects as well.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions!
